Part of the attractiveness of the New Wave movement in popular music is that it consistently produces exciting new bands who are colorful and adventurous, even if they are not always very accomplished.
Few of these bands, however; have been able to transfer their initial commercial successes into a lasting popularity.
This is not all bad, because mainstream rejection helps to keep the movement fresh and vibrant, even if it also keeps the struggling musicians poor. But one performer who emerged from the New Wave movement, gained popularity and still produces exceptional and original music is Elvis Costello.
His new album, Trust, matches his best material. The songs are a little less remote than some of his material, which does not mean the listener will like them more, but will like them sooner.
This is not to say that if you have never been a fan of Elvis Costello that you will be overwhelmed by his new album. That is possible, but the record is not a radical departure from his earlier efforts. If you did not like those, you may not like this as well.
This is not to dim Costello's talents, because he is a remarkable musician and an exceptional talent whose abilities extend far beyond the limits of any single musical school.
