Imperial Bedroom
Elvis Costello
Billy Warden
Released in 1982, this banquet is Costello's last square meal before his messy and still unresolved, descent into artistic schizophrenia.
This may sound overblown, but every track really is a masterpiece. Honest. "A Man Out of Time" explodes with naked rage just before "...And in Every Home" tip-toes across a sea of wavy strings. Costello rips open a few personal wounds on "Beyond Belief" and "Shabby Doll" but invites everyone over for a warm Christmas party with "The Loved Ones."
Perhaps the magnitude of this achievement drove Costello mad. No matter how loony he ends up, Imperial Bedroom's roomful of beauty and closet of demons ought to maintain Costello's legend until his hair falls out and his teeth float in a glass.
