University Union Ents Secretary Andy Kershaw, this week announced his latest scoop. Elvis Costello and the Attractions will play at the University Refectory on Tuesday 23rd June.
Mr Kershaw said, "Elvis missed us out on his recent British tour by a cruel twist of fate, so I renegotiated for a special one-off for after the exams. Leeds University will be the only concert he plays before touring Ireland and will probably be his last for a long time."
It is expected that by the time of the concert the capacity of the refectory will have been increased from 1500 to 1800. This is a result of the addition of a new fire escape, to be built from the East wall of the refectory down to the courtyard near the extension.
Mr Kershaw first investigated the possibility of a further fire escape last year, but was told by the University authorities that this would cost £10,000. However, he has since got an independent estimate and expects to go ahead with this contractor. Mr Kershaw explained, "It is worth bearing in mind that the cost of the escape can be met out of the profits from a couple of sell-out concerts. It will enable us to book really big bands again." The new capacity will be equal to that of Tiffany's, previously the biggest regular venue in Leeds.
Tickets for the concert should be on sale in about ten days time - watch for the announcements in Leeds Student, Feedback and the usual places. Elvis Costello's last gig at the University was in January 1979.
