Elvis Costello

Barrowland Ballroom

Douglas Martin

Hmm. An Elvis Costello concert. Count the number of bald heads and receding hairlines. Does it say something about the age of the audience? I think so.

Not that Elvis himself is deficient in the hair department, facial or otherwise. Appearing as a vision in long shaggy hair and shades, Elvis pulled off a miracle in holding this somewhat reluctant reviewer spellbound in a two hour set. Considering I knew only four of the songs (and one of them was the G.B.H. theme tune) this is no mean feat.

But there is real melody here, some real forceful guitar strumming and his revised "Tramp the Dirt Down" that went taboo after the Late Show pulled a cheer almost as loud as those for the numerous encores. Rude 5 were shockingly polite.
