Elvis Costello has also returned to rock's roots on his latest album. Punch the Clock is full of heavy sounding horn sections, uptempo melodies and soulful ballads that catch the ear. It's hard to believe that this is the same Elvis Costello who a few years back was known for never following the unwritten rules of popular music. Has the once noted musical radical sold out?
I don't think so. On Punch the Clock, Elvis has written very strong lyrics as always. The album sounds more like a musical progression for the artist. Sure, the rebel that once rocked with "Pump It Up" and "Radio, Radio" is not predominant. However, a matured singer/songwriter is definitely heard. Elvis and his music have grown. Obviously, the way which he records it has also changed.
Although not as complex as Imperial Bedroom, Punch the clock is still fun to listen to. The lyrics are written well and his backup band, The Attractions play fantastically. Although some might think the album is more pop oriented, it is not a sell out.
Billy Joel and Elvis Costello definitely put out music that was readily popular. Although both are good albums, they do lack a bit creatively. Both have worked on more complex projects in the past and been critically acclaimed for their efforts.
