Elvis Costello recently returned from the States, where he's been working on a further collaboration with George Jones, aided by Attractions Steve Naive and Pete Thomas and Nick Lowe (depping on bass for an ill Bruce Thomas). Exactly what this project involves remains a mystery, though it's rumoured that the pair cut a bunch of tracks in Nashville, including Hank Williams' "Why Don't You Love Me Like You Used To Do," "Patsy Cline's "He's Got You," and Bobby Bland's "I'll Take Good Care Of You"...
Costello also performed the aforementioned Hank Williams number, Presley's "Little Sister" and four other non-originals at a solo gig for the patients of a mental hospital just before the Stateside sojourn. The performance, a low-profile, totally unpublicised gesture, was filmed possibly for screening at the Year Of The Disabled gig that Costello, Dury and numerous other media folk will actively involve themselves in during June. The only problem reported was that during the set, the patients clapped along in a decidedly arhythmic manner, totally throwing EC off his pitch.
