One hundred thousand people swarmed into Hyde Park in London yesterday to take part in the biggest one-day musical event of the summer — and to party in the name of charity.
The revellers, who included the Prince of Wales, braved intermittent rain to gather for the second annual Party in the Park, an eight-hour music fest in aid of the Prince's Trust.
Performers included the Corrs, Gary Barlow and Geri Halliwell. "Have you missed me?" the one-time Spice Girl, making her solo debut, asked at one point. The crowd, proving more receptive than the wider record-buying public, roared in approval.
While the 25 acts were hardly cutting edge, they read like a list of the most popular acts of the past two decades: Eurythmics, Blondie, Elvis Costello, Culture Club, the Pet Shop Boys and Madness jostled with the Brand New Heavies, teen favourites Boyzone and Steps, and former EastEnders star-turned-diva Martine McCutcheon.
The event is expected to raise up to £750,000 for the charity.
