Angry fans ripped up chairs, threw beer cans and food on stage and smashed glass after a Sydney show by punk rocker Elvis Costello last night.
Whole rows of seating at the Regent Theatre were tipped over and more than 50 seat cushions were ripped from chairs.
The show's promoters estimated the damage at thousands of dollars.
Most of the 1200 people, who paid $9.50 to see Costello became angry when he refused to sing an encore after only an hour on stage.
"He walked straight to his dressing room saying he didn't want to do any more," promoter Mr. Michael Coppel said today.
"I'm afraid that's his prerogative. I believe he only does encores when he feels he has something more to say."
After a 10-minute standing ovation a man in the upstairs balcony pulled the seat out of his chair and threw it on to the stage.
He was greeted with applause then dozens of seats were ripped out and thrown.
