Elvis Costello is an artist who has literally done it all.
He's past the point of reinvention, as far as I'm concerned, and someone who has managed to stay afloat and be as important as he's proven to be for so long has to be. His latest effort, with New Orleans real-deal funk and soul keyboardist Allen Toussaint, comes at a point in his career when he can look back and admit to having done the "folk thing" with his solo tours, the "punk thing" with the Attractions in the '70s, and even - dare we say it - the dreadful "jazz thing," thanks to the inspiration from his newest wife, Wal-Mart jazz schnobster Diana Krall.
But for all the times you can criticize Elvis Costello, you have to remember that you're speaking of a living musical god. Elvis Costello changes musical styles as easily as I check my e-mail. It's at that point that the comparisons end, because I'm just a music critic, and he's just released The River in Reverse.
Better sing its praises, then.
