Our critics' best bets
David Silverman
Despite the loss of Lou Reed from the bill, this weekend's show at Alpine Valley still stacks up as one of the summer's finest. Any combination of the four acts — Elvis Costello, Edie Brickell and New Bohemians, Violent Femmes and Cowboy Junkies — would be worth the trip to East Troy, Wis. Having them all together makes it a can't-miss event. Costello, still following his latest LP, Spike, was in top form during his recent show at Poplar Creek. Brickell should have had time to recoup during a recent layoff, while the Femmes and the Cowboy Junkies remain at the top of the alternative charts.
