That's never struck me, really - but it's nice to be reminded of this lovely little gem.
Such a great lyric - I've always taken it to be about two loser friends - but in fact it could be about one lonely guy whose only companion is his shadow ("shadow rents out his green bowling shoes").
These lines are a killer:
Men without women are like fish without water to swim in
With their eyes bugging out, they flop on the beach
And look up at the girls who are just out of reach
There's no Elvis version of this, is there?
