Steve Nieve's Greatest Hits

Post by DeathWearsABigHat »

This one has probably been done before, but how about a list of your favourite Steve Nieve solos.

Here's my Top 5 (in no particular order)

I'm Your Toy (piano)
Clubland (piano)
Get Yourself Another Fool (organ)
Talking in the Dark (Costello & Nieve live box set version)
Sweet Dreams (piano)

1) The middle bit from The Loved Ones
2) The orchestration of And in Every Home (I always thought he deserved a co-writing credit for that one.)
3) I agree, the organ in Find Yourself Another Fool
4) Shot with His Own Gun (Was this the one with "Debussian ambiguities?"
5) Oliver's Army (still a favourite after all these years. Wasn't a B Side til Steve put his Abba chords on it?)

Fish and Chip Papers. Gets stuck in my head all the time, and such a fruity tone he got on that.

I've always liked his playing on Elvis version of The Ugly Things. Bowie's Absolute Beginners still sounds great in no small part due to Steves playing. Similiarly The Hothouse Flowers version of I Can See Clearly Now still gets regular golden oldie play on Irish radio, Steves input always sound good.

Sweet Dreams, I agree, is gorgeous! I also love his accompaniment on Black Sails In The Sunset - think that's my fave!

One I don't think has been mentioned; the intro for "How Much I Lied".

Did Steve peform on Elvis' Ugly Things? Thought that was Just EC, Pete Thomas and Nick Lowe. But Spike is at home, and I don't have access to its liner notes.....
If there were a king of fools than I would wear that crown/And you can all die laughing/Because I'll wear it proudly.

Also, nobody's mentioned the gorgeous piano on You'll Never Be A Man - and his work on Sad About Girls. Heartbreaking.

Also his harpsichord on You Little Fool and My Science Fiction Twin, and - Christ - his organ work on practically everything he does is bloody incredible.

I always especially loved Steve's playing on "Success" from Almost Blue.

I love the organ riff on Chelsea and the piano on Deep DT Mirror and Clown Strike. Many others too of course, just the first ones that came to mind that I hadn't seen above.

Piano on Deep Dark Truthful Mirror is by the wonderful Allen Toussaint, actually!
