with endurance like the liberty bell
and he tells you of the dreamers
but he's cracked up like the road
and he'd like to lift us up, but we're a very heavy load

After many years and much research I have come to the conclusion that the Who are the greatest rock and roll band in the world - eva.
The Beatles had the songwriting but the Who had the passion and vision.
The Stones had the swagger but the Who had the power and the punch.
The Kinks had the wit but the Who had the heart and the madness.
The Who also had the best drummer, the best bass guitarist, the best guitarist, a damn good singer and the best stage show around. Truly revolutionary, true pioneers and the best rock n roll band the world has ever seen. No contest.

Some obvious choices, but here goes:
My Generation (of course)
I Can See For Miles (apparently, he couldn't be bothered to do more than a one note guitar solo)
Won't get Fooled Again (muscular)
Music Must Change
I'm One
Love Reign O'er Me (dramatic, beautiful)
Substitute
Magic Bus (daft psychedelia)
Pictures of Lily (best song about wanking)
Behind Blue Eyes
Didn't do many 'love songs' did they?

Current Mojo has a covers of Brian Wilson bonuss CD, opening with The Who doing Barbara Ann. I would never have guessed, other than the drumming. Is this a well-known cover?
I once heard a Catalan band do a cover of 'Substitut' in Catalan. Sounded wonderful! 'Soc un substitut per un altre home' etc.

Moon was a big surf music fan. In 1966 they did a number of covers including Barbara Ann, Bucket T and The Batman Theme, and released on the Ready, Steady, Who EP.Otis Westinghouse wrote:... The Who doing Barbara Ann. I would never have guessed, other than the drumming. Is this a well-known cover?
Until the recent round of re-issues these tracks rarely got an outing, so they are farely obscure.
