which album next?

Post by TGI Jef »

hello i am pretty new to elvis' stuff. i am 20 years old, and so far i have purhcased (and gotten into) the albums in this order:

best of (2 cds)
armed forced
my aim is true
this years model
imperial bedroom

like most new fans probably, my favorite albums are the faster, more pop-oriented ones for now. this years model i find just awesome. which album next?
by the way i saw him for the first time in norfolk last week and it was just great. thanks in advance,
jeff

The way you're going, I suggest Get Happy, for its fast, pop-oriented qualities.

Stay with the earlier stuff for now. Get Happy is a must, good bonus disc too.

When I Was Cruel
Get Happy!
or Brutal Youth

Can't go wrong with any of these three... HAH! as if you can go wrong with any of his albums...

Definitely "Blood and Chocolate" - fer sure fer sure
echos myron like a siren
with endurance like the liberty bell
and he tells you of the dreamers
but he's cracked up like the road
and he'd like to lift us up, but we're a very heavy load

Get Happy. Of course, the others suggested above (e.g., Brutal Youth) are also good. Since no one else has suggested it, though, if you like Imperial Bedroom, I am going to suggest All This Useless Beauty, which is an excellent album. Maybe pick that one up after Get Happy.

Get Happy, without doubt. Then perhaps Trust or Blood & Chocolate.

Get Spike.

Though Spike is "an inferior record" even in Costello terms, when you 'like Spike' you won't care which other one you get next. Beware of frequent tastemogering when you're new, Spike was a pivotal step in a number of ways...

Why Get Happy? I just can't understand what everybody finds in it! I've heard a lot about this album but when I listened to it I was disappointed... that's very interesting....

Which next....of course, When I Was Cruel!:) Brutal Youth and Spike are also a good choice.

edit: I think if you like This Year's Model you might also like Blood&Chocolate.

You need to listen again - it's a stone cold masterpiece.

I also would recommend Spike. If you really want to get into Elvis, you have to embrace the whole deal. Spike is a great transitional record. I am biased because it was my first EC album. First rate songwriting, just doesn't 'flow' like some of the earlier stuff because of the diversity of sounds being presented.

I envy your position. But whatever you pick, DON'T go to Punch the Clock or Goodbye Cruel World next.

I recommend Blood & Chocolate or Trust. Probably Trust. It's got a little bit of everything.

GH is something special but so is Trust. BC and BY are great but not in front of those two IMHO.

Because you like the pop-oriented, fast stuff, I would agree -- Get Happy is the next logical choice.

But I don't subscribe to any order. You're already well underway in your appreciation, so even if you were to play Spike or Almost Blue, it shouldn't throw you off kilter too much. Blood and Choclate, Brutal Youth, When I Was Cruel. Hell, buy 'em all, even Juliet Letters which is underappreciated. There is fast pop elements in all of 'em.

....ahem....yet another Get Happy vote cast, here.....I love that record, in spite of it's somewhat primitive production  Or, just to mix it up a lil, Almost Blue.... funny, it took Costello's dabblings to get me to listen to C&W music...LOL

Oh yeah, definately Get Happy!! But I think Trust too would be another good move.

(Keep rotating This Year's Model in there too!)

Get Get Happy!

I could probably ask the same question...
I have:
My Aim is True, This Year's Model, Armed Forces, Get Happy, Punch the Clock, Imperial Bedroom, Kojak Variety, Spike, Mighty Like a Rose, When I was Cruel, The Delivery Man, North, The Juliet Letters, and Il Songo. My favorites have to be Armed Forces, Imperial Bedroom, and Il Songo and I hate Punch the Clock. What's good next?
