Tifts excellent current album,

has been getting more plays on my stereo in recent months than a certain other recent Lost Highway release. It's one of those albums that works and flows all the way through, a huge step up from her first album.
A great recording of one of her recent shows is just about still available here.
One thing is for sure, Elvis has the raised the bar by allowing her to open for him. He'll have to put on a really strong show to top her.

Sondre did an enthusiastic, lively show in Dublin tonight. Playing solo he accompanied himself on a selection of tasty looking electric guitars. Performing for about 90 minutes he has a refeshingly direct vocal style . With his floppy fringe , green polo shirt , blue denim jeans and running shoes he got a warm welcome from the crowd standing in the tiny Whelans venue. There was limited seating around some tables in front of the stage.

He told us that this was his first visit to Dublin and he appreciated and was surprised at how many people had come to the show. The set consisted of songs from his two albums , along with one new song and a vocal only cover of the Johnny Burke, Jimmy Van Heusen
1940's song Moonlight Becomes You.

Enjoyable as it all was I found myself wishing he had some kind of backing band. After the delights of the great sound he has on the albums I found the solo format a little basic and repetative after a while. Maybe the fact that I was seeing the show after a busy day at the end of a busy week and was tired didn't help. The Norwegians in the audience - I presume that was them shouting some non-English comments that got grins from Sondre - knew his songs but a most of the crowd didn't and their lack of total involvement was indicated by constant talking. However that was partly due to elements out of Sondre's control. It being a Friday night a lot of people were there , helped by the rather cheap ticket price , for primarily social reasons. Add to that the visitors in town for the rugby match on Sunday and you had a crowd that would need something very loud to be made shut up.

I chatted briefly with Sondre afterwards and got him to sign the CD sleeves -

After I explained how I had first heard him after he got great reviews for his support slots with Elvis Costello in '03 he said how excited he was to be supporting him again in the U.S. next month. He will not have a band with him. He remarked that Elvis will have a band. I mentioned seeing Elvis in the U.K. last week and we discussed him a bit before parting with wishes of good luck.

In short , an nice introduction to Sondre's live show - hopefully next time he'll have a band and the spirit of the albums will come through.
