They Should've Been Singles

Post by Branst »

If you were to pick 15 songs from all of EC's albums that should've been released as singles (A-Side) but weren't, what would they be? Don't make this into a compilation of your favorites, pick songs that you feel would make an impact on the charts, ones you believe everyone will enjoy. Just pretend you are Costello's record label. :)

Here is mine:
01. Stranger In The House (Country charts)
02. Lip Service
03. The Beat
04. So Young
05. Strict Time
06. The Loved Ones
07. Love Went Mad
08. Turning The Town Red
09. Indoor Fireworks
10. I Hope You're Happy Now
11. Satellite
12. Kinder Murder
13. I Still Have That Other Girl
14. Spooky Girlfriend
15. When It Sings

King Horse was such an obvious single that was never released although I seem to remember him performing it on a childrens's TV pop programme. Ah, those were the days - Elvis Costello And The Attractions were we now get McFly and Busted!
It was as much of the alphabet as I knew how to use.

Blue Chair - the Blood and Chocolate version, not the Booker T-style version!

Also think that if he'd release Man Out Of Time BEFORE you Little Fool, it would've been huge!

Tart - certainly the highlight of WIWC; and catchy, too - that's never hurt in the singles game...
(Though the actual album version is probably not my favourite)

Other End of the Telescope
The World and His Wife
Tart
Pony Street
Black and White World
Big Tears
Brown To Blue
Still (maybe it was)
Pills and Soap
Pidgeon English

Geez, I give up. They could all be singles, but realistically they'd all sink like a stone.

Pills and Soap (EC as The Imposter) reached no. 16 in the UK in 1983 and EC has not reached those dizzy heights since!
I think Turning The Town Red was a double a-side with I Wanna Be Loved which reached no. 25.

I Hope You're Happy Now and the album version of Blue Chair would have been my choice as singles from B+C, not Tokyo Storm Warning and I Want You.

God's Comic or Let Him Dangle from Spike would have been interesting choices.
It was as much of the alphabet as I knew how to use.
