In Spite of Ourselves- John Prine.

There's a rumor that if you play a John Prine record, go into the bathroom, turn off the lights and say "It's a happy enchilada and you think you're gonna drown" three times, you will see Mood Swung's image in the mirror for, like, six seconds.

Speaking of happy enchiladas, the first time I listened to the brilliant Fair & Square was at work, so it was running in the background and I couldn't pay attention all the time, but I could have sworn there was a song on it called Crazy-Ass Saloon.

The Ramones - Hey Ho Let's Go - Anthology

. . . while Jessica and I are taking the opportunity of Doc and the 3 boys being away at Boy Scout Camp this week to re-do the breakfast nook. Jess and her friend Sarah are painting a mural on the wall - some kind of Italian/old world scene with rocks and steps, etc. Pretty good music to work to - keeps you pepped up. :)

I have a day off and it's too hot to go outside, and my girlfriend Ellen is visiting her mother, so I'm spending my day on my shady balcony drinking beer and listening to all of John Prine's albums chronologically and playing along on Ellen's great sounding Spanish guitar. So far, no neighbors have complained. Maybe they can tell that I'm happy. Gotta go, Unwed Fathers is coming on.

Miles Davis "Kind of Blue" - never gets old. Always fresh. Always exciting.
Brilliant. I hear something new everytime I play it. Number 1 all time favorite bar none.

Cat Stevens, BUDDHA AND THE CHOCOLATE BOX

I found a wicked cheap copy of this today and couldn't resist getting it, despite the fact that I have a happy glut of new stuff already.

I'm pretty sure it was the first LP I ever bought, shortly after my twelfth birthday. It's a great record, despite sounding understandably dated; the final track, Home In the Sky, was always my favorite. I would still gladly have it played at my funeral.

A funny thing is, I always loved the packaging, including the photo of the wooden Buddha on the front cover. But when I saw it today in the record store it looked newly familiar somehow. A look in the liner notes tells me it's from the 10th Century and currently resides a half mile from me, at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts.

And I thought it was going to be some bonkers Swedish soap opera that King was amusingly addicted to.

Talking of BONKERS: Kate Bush, The Dreaming. I'd never heard it until recently. It's great, I can see that, but it's also bonkers, and you have to be bonkers to love it.

SMM, I loved Cat Stevens as a youngster , mainly due to my older brothers records of his, and a year or so ago I went through a stage of buying all those old records I grew up with and hadnt heard in years - and I was blown away with how fantastic they still sounded. Buddha and the Chocolate was about the only one I didnt get - but I remember Oh Very Young and Sun C 79 off that one. He was a very very talented guy - great singer too.

and he tells you of the dreamers
but he's cracked up like the road
and he'd like to lift us up, but we're a very heavy load

Thanks to a message is another thread by normabuell, I am listening to the Mahavishnu Orchestra album called "Apocalypse" with orchestration and conducting by Michael Tillson Thomas (a few years before he collaborated with Elvis on Il Sogno).

I like this old, ethereal, early 70's sound of John McLaughlin searchin for the vehicle to express himself. He hadn't found it, but this was a valiant, courageous attempt when a rock/jazz/fusion collaboration with a full Orchestra was not just uncommon, it didn't happen. Until Toshika Akiashi and Lew Tabackin (husband and wife, then...not now) formed a big band that contained strong jazz elements, this album remained as fairly unigue and stood alone..

Beck "Guero". This record becomes more enjoyable with every listen. Incredible montage of vignettes and hooks that draw from all over the Beck Catalog, but most heavily from the "Odelay" period.

I know I've pushed this record before. It is really an enjoyable listen. After Seachange, which I respected but didi not play too often, it is a breath of very fresh air.

Elliott Smith 'Needle In The Hay', used powerfully and sadly for the attempted suicide scene in The Royal Tenenbaums, which I finally got to see this evening.

a deafening silence. there's no one home but me! and for the life of me, I can't decide how to spend these few precious hours. except to hang out in the kitchen in my ratty pjs, making debmcmuffins and marinating a pork tenderloin that I will no doubt grill beyond recognition this evening.
