Tour Lyric Change: Pills & Soap

Post by Poppet »

okay, what WAS that change in Pills & Soap?

original:

The king is in the counting house
Some folk have all the luck
And all we get are pictures of Lord and Lady Muck

in Boston, at least, LUCK was changed to something that sounded like WISH, with the next line changing as well.

to what? anybody know?
... name the stars and constellations,
count the cars and watch the seasons....

Well, I don't know Poppet. But that just triggered a memory for me.

At the Ryman when he sang Brilliant Mistake, I now remember that he changed the last verse somewhat. I was still miffed at the security people for trying to take my camera, so I had forgotten that the words were different.

Now I don't remember what they were.

Poppet: if you have a spare half hour and go back to last October, you will find the ever helpful John Foyle giving us chapter and verse on that one. I can't remember the new verse, only that it was something to do with Germans! This was in response to the London gig c. Oct 10, so it may not be too hard to find.

Spooky: I was struck by that too (at the Birmingham gig, end Oct, beginning Nov), but don't recall if it was discussed. did he change the marvellous 'boulevard of broken dreams' line? Unimprovable!

Interesting to want to amend just the odd line this way.

Yeah Spooky, I've only seen him sing Briliant mistake a couple of times - you were lucky to get a rare outing of it. The last verse loses some of its 'words of loving whispers and the acts of murdering screams' bit. I've never quite caught what he does sing either, but it seems like '(something) the make with (something) and with lies and lies and lies and lies' or some thing like that anyway. Wonder why - things like this aren't accidental with EC!

At Clearwater a couple of weeks ago he changed the lyric in 'Indoor Fireworks' from "Don't think for a moment dear that we'll ever be through" to "...we'll ever be true."

Otis: that's exactly the line that he started changing, and I feel the same way - don't change one word of that! I was still so foul at the security - not for trying to take my camera, but because there were so many around me that were doing the same thing and not getting caught. It's my Mary Poppins image - does it every time. I wish beyond words that I could remember exactly what he said. It may haunt me forever. . . . . .
