When I Was Cruel No.2. It should have been the opening single of WIWC, bringing attention the album.
The BY singles: Just About Glad, My Science Fiction Twin, Still Too Soon To Know and All The Rage. BY would have been huge.
Punishing Kiss or Passionate Fight, both which he gave to Ute Lemper for her album Punishing Kiss... wasted opportunities.
Impatience. It could have caused some controversy... "Hey, that sounds nothing like North! And how come we don't get it in the States??". He could say, "Well stay tuned, that might be my new direction. Enjoy North in the meantime".

No clue whether this might have actually been singles, but definitely "Toledo", "Blue Chair", "Hand in Hand"...

45 should have been the lead single off WIWC. Daft mistake, he used up all the publicity window (TV and radio appearances and the like) with Doll, Revolution which, although a fantastic song, was never gonna be a hit with its lo-fi subversion. The video for 45, when it did come out as a '45' didn't exactly do it any heavy rotation favours either.
Likewise Sulky Girl could have been massive, if it wasn't for the hoarsely shouted chorus, stalling as it did in the lower reaches of the Top 30 in the UK. It needed something a bit more seductive, but as his producer of the time, Mitchell Froom, said 'Nobody produces Elvis, except him' and love him as I do, he's not infallibly the best self editor. I know he'd be pissed off at any comments, but he does often say he wants to reach the widest audience possible and I think he plays it wrong sometimes.
Elvis has often spoken about how the popular reaction to Veronica's success stunned him out of his cynicism that people could understand him in a more populist form. Well he's gone backinto his cynicism since.

"So Like Candy" wasn't a single, was it? It definitely should have been. In any sane era this would have been a monster hit. (It always struck me as something that could have been past off as a left over song from "Revolver" or "Rubber Soul.")

Neither SLC nor Other side... were hit singles in the UK. Of all Elvis's singles, I never undertsood why the latter was not a big hit. My kids love it....esp the "mad man standing by the side of the road" and "yeah(yeah),yeah(yeah).." bits. Its one of his most catchy numbers and sticks in your head after a single listen.
for those that are interested....
So Like Candy failed to chart in the UK
Other Side of Summer reached the dizzy heights of number 43
Must have been the beard...
I hope You're Happy Now was a B side ('I Want You') - failed to chart

'You tripped...' was definitely a single.
A stiff one but definitely a single....it failed to chart. Interestingly, the follow up (London's Brilliant Parade) peaked at number 48. Not many follow up singles improve on chart postions for Elvis.
It was backed by 'You've Got to Hide Your Love Away', 'Step Inside Love' and 'Sticks and Stones' - all taken from the TV series 'Family'.
A great singles package IMHO
Unless someone can prove me wrong, Elvis's last self-penned top forty hit was 'Sulky Girl' which reached 22 in the UK.
I'll shut up now....
