Tower Of Movies

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

I go away for a week's holiday relaxing by the beach, and what do I return to find?... some infidel has knocked the Seven Samurai, one of the greatest cinematic epics ever put to celluloid off the list!!?? Ok, I could stomach that if it were for something reasonable, but to do it for Evil Dead II?????... oh the horror!!!!

wehitandrun, you are off my christmas card list forever.

Anyway, down to business...

I take it that once a film is off the list, it is gone for good (sob  ), in which case I will do as follows:

Out: The Birds... as much as I like this film, I am afraid Rod Taylor just leaves me cold.
In: Raise the Red Lantern.

Amores Perros - Alejandro González Iñárritu
Manhattan - Woody Allen
Dr. Strangelove - Kubrick
Paris, Texas - Wim Wenders
Treasure of the Sierra Madre - John Huston
The 400 Blows - François Truffaut
The Third Man - Carol Reed
Simon of The Desert - Luis Bunuel
Singin' in the Rain - Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen
Raise the Red Lantern - Zhiang Yimou

EV -- Is "Cockfighter" better than Hellman's better known "Two Lane Blacktop"? Personally, I could barely stay awake through that one...don't understand the cult behind "Two Lane" at all, and, on the strength of that dislike, I simply cannot believe this film is worthy of the Tower (though I've been wrong before....). Nevertheless....

Out -- Cockfighter. Sorry, old Vez....

In -- El Vez brought in Bunuel earlier, so perhaps he'll forgive me for adding one with Luis firing on all cylinders. One of the most inspired black comedies ever made. Proof that, the character in Whit Stillman's "Metropolitan" notwithstanding, the surrealists were not "just a bunch of social climbers!"

Now, I must prepare for Sundance...farewell to the tower!

Manhattan - Woody Allen
Dr. Strangelove - Kubrick
Paris, Texas - Wim Wenders
Treasure of the Sierra Madre - John Huston
The 400 Blows - François Truffaut
The Third Man - Carol Reed
Notorious - Alfred Hitchcock
Singin' in the Rain - Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen
Raise the Red Lantern - Zhiang Yimou
The Exterminating Angel -- Luis Bunuel

Keeping in mind that I liked Two Lane Blacktop, I would have to say that I think Cockfighter is the better film and the pace is very snappy since Hellman was essentially making a high art exploitation film (same as Two Lane I guess but this one has that fun, raw B movie quality to it) that managed to be one of best, if not THE best, things to ever get financed on Roger Corman's dime. That may sound like faint praise but I actually consider the Price/Corman Edgar Allan Poe films to be really, really good.
