I like those. He does have an amazingly doleful face. Time Being (Canadian release!) is a prime example. Weird how long it's taken to get a US release. It's not as if he doesn't have a fan-base their. Most odd. And presumably all fans there keen to get it can just order it easily enough from Canada.Who Shot Sam? wrote:Just got this yesterday - his first release on Kiefer's label Ironworks. Will give it some time to soak in. The cover is different from the UK version, which is not a bad thing. Sexsmith albums have notoriously bad covers for some reason - different poses of a bummed-out Ron.
Hope you like it, WSS. Like all Ron andlots of good things, it takes 4-5 plays to really get it. There are some absolute gems on it. I didn't care for some of the more lightweight elements on it at first (Grim Trucker), but after a while you get to appreciate every single element of it. Three or four songs are up there with the best of his output: Hands of Time, All in Good Time, And Now the Day is Done, Never Give Up and in particular the breathtakingly beautiful Snow Angel, which is surely a top 5 all time Ron number. And it all works well live.
Interested in hearing Field Trip. Will check at Hype Machine.

Miles Davis "In a Silent Way" featuring everyone. Johns McLaughlins work is frightenly beautiful in the way that it captures Miles direction without sounding coerced or influenced in any way. Sounds free as a bird. This is such beautiful music, that can be listened to actively, passively, horizontally (recommended!), vertically, during episodes of vertigo, and all of the other moments in between the above. Especially launching another welcome to my working week.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Your Funeral... My Trial
Havn't listened much to Nick Cave, got Abbatoir Blues/Lyre... a while back which I really like. Found Funeral... and From Her... real cheap a few days ago and I have really taken a liking to this one. Even better than what I'd listened to previously. How's "The Firstborn Must Die" ? I found that even cheaper than the other two.

Bright Eyes - "Four Winds" , "Reinvent The Wheel", "Tourist Trap"
Three songs from Bright Eyes' upcoming EP, a taster of a new album, Cassadaga, coming out on April 10.
Conor Oberst seems to be getting extreme reactions, from comparisons to young Bob Dylan to being called pompous prick, but I do think he writes very good songs AND I like his voice. The three above, first alt country with a hint of Irish, second - orchestrated pop, and third - a ballad, definitely whet my appetite for his new album.
Guest contributors include M.Ward, David Rawlings, Gillian Welch, and members of Sleater-Kinney !!

Three hours of a presentation by a strategic planning consulting group who thinks their experience with Ocean Frieghter Navigation Systems has direct relevance to the adoption of medical devices that determine hemoglobin levels in the blood without a blood sample. God give me strength.
Somehow I will eventually relate this to music, but I am blocked by the glare of the powerpoint projector.

RóisÃn Elsafty - Má bhÃonn tú liom bà liom
Songs (mostly) in Irish , so not even I know what they are about but ,like Joanna Newsom, there's a tone to this album that's just captivating.
I've been waiting for this album since I saw Ms Elsafty in a charity concert headed by Elvis in Dublin in 2001.
Writing in Costello fanzine at the time I commented -
Then he brought back on what was, for me, the evening’s
discovery. Roisin Elsafty sings acapella. ‘sean nos’
as the Irish call it. This slightly built girl with
long black hair gave a truly mesmerising performance.

Her own site isn't up to much! Don't know of any sites with samples, do you? Would like to hear.
This reminds me, saw some rave reviews about Julie Feeney, Irish singer who's a classically trained musician and fashion model at the same time, I believe.

Another new name! Mancunian, which is always a good start (especially if he's a Utd fan, unlike Oasis, and, sadly, Mark E):

Excellent singer, great album. It's been out here for a year so I haven't heard it in a while. The marketing campaign for it , now it's getting a wider release, is a bit unfortunate. They keep harping on about how she recorded it for buttons, the self releasing etc. All very admirable but an impression of a rather joyless, calculating process is felt.Julie Feeney
I saw her doing a support slot to a Teddy Thompson club show here in late '05. The under advertised Tuesday night show attracted a tiny audience - c.29 people - so I couldn't help hearing Julie and her assistant as they sat behind me after her set. She had only been asked to do the show that afternoon, didn't know Teddy and , due to a prior engagement, had to leave during his show.

Truly indie. the clips I heard on her site disappointed me relative to the hype, but it would probably repay repeated listening.johnfoyle wrote:Excellent singer, great album.
