What are you listening to right now?

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

Will have to check that out. I have not really taken the time to investigate The Strokes - Brooklyn bands have been more my thing - but will give it a listen.

Cruising into the 4th of July hoilday with this...

Encouraged by this little passage in a blog review : "The first hook, 18 seconds in, starting with the words "So in taking you back to the scene of the crime," has something of the unbridled melodicism of early Elvis Costello...", I downloaded two songs from this EP (legally!).

The name of the band is A Passing Feeling, and the two songs I've just heard are "Book Of Matches" and "Probably".
Nothing groundbreaking, but it's a kind of music I like a lot: under 3-minute bursts of poppy, punkish energy with great hooks and choruses.
Will have to keep an eye on this band.

Now back to really serious stuff - World Cup. :D

There's a short piece on JC and that song here -- http://obscuresound.com/?p=158 And it mentions something about a Pulp rarity.

That's Hawley's old band, ain't it? I haven't heard any of their stuff and after hearing what RH has to say about it am inclined to think I'm not missing much. Am I wrong?

Heavy going.

My new favourite band of a Swedish origin.

Tedious.

I had that Longpigs album out last week and wondered why I'd bought it in the first place. Probably fancied the lead singer or something.

Definitely not an easy, breezy summer record, is it? I need to spend some more time with the headphones to know what to make of it. Original, if nothing else.

You like Shack, PoP? Their latest one is mighty fine, even if they are Scousers!

Definitely not. I had it on last night and it refused to let me drop off to sleep; probably because it creeped me out - most certainly because it's like nothing I've heard before. It's going to be one of those 6/7/8 listens until it sinks in records, isn't it?

I do like Shack, but didn't know they had a new one out. I haven't taken much of an interest in them since Here's Tom... left me cold after the fantastic HMS Fable.

New one is called The Corner of Miles and Gil. Better than either Here's Tom... or HMS Fable IMO, though I liked both well enough.

Oooh, it'd have to be pretty darn good to surpass my love for Fable! I'll give it a go anyway. :D

Well, it's not as good as 'The Sun Is Often Out' - the debut album, but it has its moments. It represents a certain era that I have very fond memories of. It's nothing especially impressive but it's enjoyable. Get the debut ahead of this though, if you're curious.

Bizarre title! Like it. What does the 'corner' refer to, do we think?

Maybe it's a reference to Thelonius Monk's Brilliant Corners? I had assumed the title referenced Miles Davis and Gil Evans.

Supposedly a reference to Miles Davis/Gil Evans and their jazz collaborations - Sketches of Spain, Porgy & Bess, etc. There are horn arrangements and other orchestral elements on the album, so I suppose it makes sense. The album is on Noel Gallagher's label Sour Mash, so at least Oasis have finally done something of value!

Well I got the Davis/Evans thing, it was the 'corner' that threw me. The meeting of them?

'Sour Mash' is a good record label name, no? Always loved that expression, and I guess it's one Noel's read on several occasions.

The only Shack song I know is Natalie's Party, from a mag compilation. Fun 'n' groovy.

This was never a favourite Roxy-album of mine but listening to it again in its entirety I can say it's atleast pretty damned good. Includes Love Is The Drug which is sadly what most people will think of when they hear of Roxy Music.

Yeah , Siren is the forgotten Roxy Music record, not quite as good as Country Life or Stranded but not far off- Nightingale is a great track, Both Ends Burning, She Sells - all top notch.
echos myron like a siren
with endurance like the liberty bell
and he tells you of the dreamers
but he's cracked up like the road
and he'd like to lift us up, but we're a very heavy load

This is the first solo album by Tim O'Reagan, who played drums for The Jayhawks and sang a handful of songs with the group. It's pretty good...

:) :) Nice catch!

I dunno - I could not spend that much time in my car. When we were at the "Repo Man" screening the line that got the biggest laugh was, "The more you drive the less intelligent you are."
