Song Title game got me to reflecting on early-middle era James Taylor and I pulled out "Gorilla"...which I consider to be his Sgt.Peppers. He closes the album with a beautiful Lullaby to his baby daughter called "Sarah Maria", and I used to sing it to my daughter subsitituting her name.
To this day, she will begin to hum that song on long road trips or while doing homework and she has no idea that it's a lullaby that she heard repeatedly as an infant. I suppose she credits dear ol' Dad, so I guess I better break the news that I ripped it off.
James, the royalties check is int he mail.
Gorilla is a great album. From beginning to end.

Otis, you should pick up Under Cold Blue Stars if you like those two albums. It's more somber than Nashville and 1972, but I'd probably rank it ahead of 1972 - it may take some time for that one to grow on me.Otis Westinghouse wrote:Lucky driver! 1972 is very fine, is it not. I'm impressed by how different the characters of Nashville and 1972 are. They're both top notch. Hard to say right now which I like more.
Gillian Welch - Revival. For Elv!
I'm listening to "Otis And Marlena" from Joni Mitchell's Don Juan's Reckless Daughter.

WSS: a colleague who has the lot rated the last two highest, so I resisted the temptation to buy it for a tenner off the merchandise stall at The Junction. But now you're making me wonder. I think there are some very good songs on 1972. It's more diverse than Nashville. The songwriting is maybe even better on the latter, but I think there are many gems on the former. He's not in the Ron Sexsmith league, but he's pretty good.

Mighty Quin Medley from Leon Live - the triple album set from Leon Russel live from Long Beach Arena in 1972. Full tilt raw boogie woogie rock n roll gospel and easily one of the best live albums ever released. Impossible to listen to and sit still.

You're rubbing it in now, ain't you? Though you only have it as bootleg (as I do, on tape, in a plastic bag, somewhere in the recesses of Chateau Westinghouse), not the official release. I don't know why I didn't get it at the time it came out.
I was playing Nashville Skyline the other day. God the singing is bizarre. what possessed him? I quite like it in places, but there's something so weir about recording an entire LP using a totally different voice. I love I Threw It All Away. How does Roddy's version compare, IP.
Chavez Ravine - Ry Cooder. It's a great LP. Long and expansive, but stuffed with great music and sounds.

Otis, though the live recording comes from 1988 and it's credited to Aztec Camera, I think it's actually only Roddy on the stage. If you like just his voice and acoustic guitar, then you'd surely like this take.I was playing Nashville Skyline the other day. God the singing is bizarre. what possessed him? Hey, that sculpture is just down the road from me--

Well, the museum will not let me link the image, but you can have a look.
I haven't been listening to much music this week. However, Liz Phair's distinctly un-PC song Johnny Feelgood has been in my head non-stop, for some reason.

This record has lots of Elvisy bits in it - a kinda blueprint for Imperial Bedroom methinks.
