Your 10 favourite....Velvets/Lou songs

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

Your 10 favourite....Velvets/Lou songs

Post by Otis Westinghouse »

Tempted to do 10 for each, but in the spirit of the Weller thread:

Heroin
Pale Blue Eyes
What Goes On?
I'll Be Your Mirror
Satellite of Love
Jesus
Candy Says
Caroline Says
Sad Song
Waiting for the Man

Oh fuck, no room for Perfect Day. 11 it is, then. And think of all the other classics I haven't included!

Inspired by Mike's list, I just pulled out White Light/White Heat and listened again to "Sister Ray" - a glorious 17:30 of the Velvets at their scuzzed out best. I'm usually more in the mood for the laid-back pop sound of Loaded, but this fits the bill at the moment.

I bought the 'Peel Slowly And See'-set and so far I've only gone through ... & Nico and ...Light. I love the first, and I like the latter. I'm curious about the production on it. It really sounds horribly muddy, which I do find charming on a brief track like the title. But Sister Ray is just too much. I really couldn't tell if this was entirely by choice or something unfortunate :P.

Lou Reed (my knowledge of Reed is limited to about 4 of his solo albums, but I couldn't bear to narrow down my Velvets list any further):

1. Satellite Of Love
2. Smalltown
3. I'm So Free
4. Perfect Day
5. Crazy Feeling
6. I Love You, Suzanne
7. Turn To Me
8. Romeo Had Juliette
9. Dirty Blvd.
10. Modern Dance

The Velvet Underground:

1. Stephanie Says
2. Pale Blue Eyes
3. I'm Waiting For The Man
4. Venus In Furs
5. Cool It Down
6. What Goes On
7. Some Kinda Love
8. Who Loves The Sun
9. Sweet Jane
10. Rock and Roll
This morning you've got time for a hot, home-cooked breakfast! Delicious and piping hot in only 3 microwave minutes.

Way more excited about the Velvets than Lou’s obtuse and often awful solo career, but I think the best opening lines he has written are;

‘Caught between the twisted stars
The plotted lines the faulty map
That brought columbus to new york’
Romeo Had Juliette

Beginning To See The Light
All Tomorrow’s Parties
What Goes On
Femme Fatale
I’m Waiting For The man
The Gift
I Heard Her Call My Name
Sweet Jane

Street Hassle
Romeo Had Juliette

You knew I couldn't stay away from these lists too long.

And in this case, it has to be two lists. If combined, very few Velvets tracks would make the cut even if they're one of my favourite bands ever. Yup, I Love Lou.

VU (no particular order)

Heroin
There She Goes Again
I'll Be Your Mirror
I Heard Her Call My Name
Sister Ray
Guess I'm Falling In Love
Some Kinda Love
Candy Says
Rock'n'Roll
I'm Sticking With You

Lou (in a pleasant sequence!)

Romeo Had Juliette
Legendary Hearts
Men Of Good Fortune
So Alone
Caroline Says II
The Bed
Crazy Feeling
Baton Rouge
Street Hassle
The Blue Mask (or Ecstacy or Perfect Day or The Bells or Hello It's Me...)

(Berlin is the best album I know. Hence the omission of anything from Transformer or Magic & Loss, both pretty flawless albums. )
What this world needs is more silly men.

Welcome back! Your contributions are welcome. I'm with Richard more than you over Lou/VU, but am perplexed by your omissions!
