anyone here travelling to glasgow after the liverpool show? same night or next day? im thinking of flying in for the 2 shows but rail prices of 70 pounds (single liverpool-glasgow) are very off putting. my flight from tenerife is only that price. I'll gladly pay fuel costs if someone can get me to scotland (1 way) for less than 70 quid.

I'm going to have to miss this as I move house the next day and my domestic manager is not happy at the prospect of me swanning off to the concert.
If anyone would like a ticket for face value, please PM me.
Thanks

Blistering gig, quite possibly better than the Roundhouse or Liverpool, second song was Possession, we also got Watch Your Step, Less Than Zero, Motel Matches , Ruver In Reverse Moods For Moderns and the amazing combination of Sundays Best and Polythene Pam. Elvis spoke very little except to mock the appointment of Boris Johnson as Foreign Secretary and he said a few comments to inspire the Scottish Nationalists though didn't change the lyrics of OA to include the boys from the Mersey and the CLYDE and the Tyne . Only downside fir me was the prolonged guitar fiddling he did in Chelsea, Clubland, TRIR, Alibi and a few others and at one stage it seemed that Pete did the bit of finale drum fill that leads to a conclusion just to bring it to an end. I don't know if they've taken a bit of offence from the comment Bruce Thomas put in Rough Notes about bring a bit sluggish but they played with a real ferocity and venom tonight . The drum roadie came out at least twice to fix the Mike on Pete's side tom-tom and he seemed livid, staring to that side of the stage for several minutes before shifting his gaze away. Steve needs bifocals now as his glasses were off and on all night and Elvis was sweating so much, he W's flinging sweat ad he strummed the guitar from his cuffs. AndrewM, Andrea and Nichola all waited for the band and met the delightful Mrs History Repeats but sadly they all we whisked off in darkened people carriers. Finally - bloody Scotland and heir metal detectors- got frisked again going into Barrowlands for recording devices . Thank heavens they never reach my ankles

Thanks, history, I think it was me and Nichola 76 who sort of helped though not much. Mrs Sulky will bar my nomadic tendencies if she thinks there's a Mrs Sulky at every Elvis concert !
Thanks also for your kind offer -next time you're over perhaps we can all meet ?

Music review: Elvis Costello, Barrowland, Glasgow

Keith Bruce

14 July 2016

five stars

AFTER a gap of nearly12 years, the longest since he first played Glasgow's venerable palais de rock, Elvis Costello opened his returning set at the Barrowland Ballroom with a song that first appeared on the B-side of the Pump It Up single in 1978, Big Tears.

It was something of a statement of intent for a show, in the company of regular touring band The Imposters (two of whom have been with him all the way) that was designed for the aficionados. With the band set up in close formation and the most basic of lighting rigs, this was a back-to-basics rock'n'roll show, led by a much-underrated guitarist from the front on an array of instruments (and pedals) deployed for their sonic possibilities as much as any virtuoso fingering.

Although there were a couple of sings from his most recent studio excursion, Wise Up Ghost, this was mostly a fascinating rifle through the back pages of the Costello catalogue, with enough of his well-known songs and cover versions to keep the less well-versed engaged. The latter included Watching the Detectives, Oliver's Army, and Shipbuilding, which segued into Alibi (from When I Was Cruel) in what sounded very much like a nod to Chilcott.

Political chat was minimal though, with the focus firmly on the music. Moods for Moderns, (I Don't Want To Go To) Chelsea, and Delivery Man's Bedlam were all funky delights, Sunday's Best a demented carousel waltz and Clubland a Latin-piano-garnished quick step.

Good Year for the Roses may have been introduced as the last dance, but it was the closing segue of Nick Lowe's (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding into Tramp the Dirt Down that gave Costello's fans the opportunity to sing at the new Westminster administration.

First time I've risked taking a recording device into the Barrowlands, but had no issue despite their absurdly strict frisking. Will upload later provided everything has turned out ok.
