THE YEAR PARK SLOPE WON HALLOWEEN

We all know that Park Slope has a bunch of celebs roaming the streets these days -- has anyone spotted Chloe Sevigny in the 'hood, yet? -- but on Halloween, Friend o'FIPS, Lynn Harris, had what is perhaps the most epic celeb sighting in Slope history. I'll let her tell the story:

When I first moved to Park Slope 20 years ago I went to a party in the apartment building on 9th Street near the 7th Ave. subway stop. All of a sudden, I see Steve Buscemi come in, and I’m all, I’m so cool, I went to a party in New York City and Steve Buscemi was there, except it turned out that he had just come in because the keg was leaking into his apartment. Since then, I’ve come to realize that he is really just part of the neighborhood, usually walking around in a baseball cap and sunglasses, head down, not in an unfriendly way, but just looking like a character Steve Buscemi would play. He has since moved to lower-numbered streets, and here’s where I first heard about the Costello connection. Our neighbors’ back deck faces his, and one night they heard guitar and singing that sounded uncannily like Elvis Costello, only not so uncanny because it was Elvis Costello, just Elvis Costelloing on Buscemi’s back deck.
So at around 5 pm on Friday, when things were just getting rolling, we were heading down 6th Street toward 6th Avenue with our gang of feral 8 year olds as two grown men were heading up, in full Halloween. We greeted each other — everyone was greeting everyone — and a split second later all the adults in our group did a full body double-take. That was Steve Buscemi! That was Steve Buscemi! And I, in my own split second, remembered the Back Deck Sessions. AND THAT GUY WITH THE ELVIS COSTELLO GLASSES IS ELVIS COSTELLO. My friend Lisa, God bless her, turned and jogged in front of them and asked for a photo. As you can see, they jauntily obliged.
Note: I hear from neighbors that they were actually trick or treating. And allegedly also giving out candy, right back.
Your move, Sir Patrick.

This video from 2011 is pretty exceptional. Unlike most of their other videos of Elvis covers , which are usually stage based 'live' versions , this is a relatively sophisticated production , filmed on a location etc. The cheesy opening dialogue even has sly references to other Elvis songs. Watch - enjoy!

A fuller version of Gregory K. Feick's photo of Elvis and T Bone in Mill Valley record store in California, c. 1985 . Mitch Weinstein has posted it on f/book, saying he and his friend Greg just happened to be in the store and got the photo. Mitch thinks Jake Riviera paid Greg $100 for the photo. For years it only appeared in black and white, until a cropped version appeared in colour in the booklet with the Rhino reissue of King Of America in 2005. Mitch has lost contact with Greg - maybe someone here knows what he's up to these days.

A performance of The Juliet Letters in Vancouver on Feb. 15th - along with work by Elvis's musical associate Jocelyn Morlock . It's has to be assumed that Elvis , if he's in town, will be in attendance.

Koerner Quartet to Present NOTES OF LOVE & PROTEST 2/15 at Vancouver Academy of Music

January 7 2015

Vancouver, BC -- What do respected Canadian composer Jocelyn Morlock, famed singer/songwriter Elvis Costello, and 20th Century classical giant Benjamin Britten have in common? The Koerner Quartet will delight Vancouver audiences with the answer as it interprets the work of these diverse talents in Notes of Love & Protest, Sunday, February 15 at 2pm in the Vancouver Academy of Music's (VAM). Koerner Recital Hall The third concert in the Quartet's 2014/15 season serves up a musical valentine that is "more zeitgeist than saccharine," promises Quartet cellist and VAM Executive Director, Joseph Elworthy.

The performance opens with Vermilion by Juno-nominated composer Jocelyn Morlock, one of Canada's most commissioned and recorded new composers, who will be in attendance.

"I first collaborated with Jocelyn in 2010 for the Parisot Cellofest at VAM when I commissioned her to compose a cello quartet in honour of my mentor, Aldo Parisot, who was celebrating his 50th year as a distinguished professor of cello at Yale University," says Mr. Elworthy. "I have since performed many of her works including a soon-to-released Naxos recording of her double cello concerto, Aeromancy."

In addition to being described as one of this country's "most distinctive voices," Ms. Morlock also lends her talent to the work of Elvis Costello and Diana Krall as their copyist and arranger. It is not surprising then that Koerner Quartet's Valentine gift includes Mr. Costello's acclaimed The Juliet Letters, featuring VAM'S noted faculty member and baritone Alan MacDonald.

"Elvis Costello's The Juliet Letters hit me like a ton of bricks when I was at university," Mr. Elworthy says. "The coupling of these beautifully crafted pop/art-songs with a string quartet was daring to say the least. We're delighted to be presenting this exceptional piece."

The afternoon closes with Benjamin Britten's deeply moving String Quartet No. 2 In Time of War, written as a cry against the state of the world in the mid-20th Century by a composer who would take his place in the pantheon of musical masters.

About Koerner Quartet (koernerquartet.com) - Comprising four of Canada's most esteemed musicians - Nicholas Wright (violin), Jason Ho (violin), Emilie Grimes (viola), and Joseph Elworthy (cello) - the Koerner Quartet is known internationally for its nuanced interpretive style. Founded in 2012, the Koerner Quartet is ensemble-in-residence at the Vancouver Academy of Music, where its members balance performing with their dedication to sharing the joy of chamber music with aspiring musicians. The Koerner Quartet directs annual chamber music seminars in Vancouver and Hong Kong, in addition to numerous educational outreach initiatives in conjunction with performances throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. Frequently heard on live broadcasts for CBC, BBC, Radio Europe, Hong Kong Radio 4, and NHK, the Koerner Quartet has received critical acclaim for its 2013 album of string quartets by Ravel and Bartok. The Quartet is named in honor of one of the founders of the Vancouver Academy of Music, Ms. Iby Koerner.

It's interesting seeing the Made in 1955 badge. Wasn't Elvis born in 1954 or am I missing something?

Ethan Hawke is stating in a recent interview at the Sundance Film Festival that he partly owes the start to his film career to a trusty Sony Walkman and the blasting of "My Aim is True" while auditioning for the role he eventually won in Dead Poet's Society back in the 80's:
