Re: Elvis on Letterman, June 5th 2014
I managed to stay awake- 'spured' on by the Game one action in San Antonio to catch this performance. I was taken by the seeming ache in the lyric- the accumulation of 'lies' we tell ourselves over the decades within those 'dark recesses' and the sobering re-evaluation most of us are forced to do as the years pile on and we cross that threshold post 59. The introspection that one found in "Deep Dark Truthful Mirror" hits all the harder when one is focused upon through the 'sharp' lights of one's interlocutor's eyes. It was a wonderful treat he premiered last evening and one that gently troubled my sleep the remainder of the night.
"....there's a merry song that starts in 'I' and ends in 'You', as many famous pop songs do....'

i think he means forty rhymes with sporty, whereas sixty would present the rhyming problem.

I wonder if it's the title track of a song.

Hey BA - It looks like you are free to stick with the life of crime. I guess that Sony will be back in action? Sunshine and lollipops, BA!

BA & Elvis on Twitter in the last hour or so - very chummy altogether!
May I humbly suggest:
'Til I swapped my spouse for a fast little car
that was red and NIFTY
And my friends call again the night before
I was twenty-nine, thirty-nine, and FIFTY

I'd try something likestricttime81 wrote: May I humbly suggest:

'Til I swapped my spouse for a fast little car
that was red and mighty fine

I was twenty-nine, thirty-nine, and forty-nine
By the way I think the song is great - and terrific to see new non-collaborative Elvis material.

Re: Elvis on Letterman, June 5th 2014
i thought of that too Mike....but, i want it subtitled (59) as THAT age is what he is dubbing the last year of his youth. hence, the lyric would have to be: 49, 59 SIXTY! do we have ANYTHING rhyming with sixty????
edit: oh, is he saying 29, 39, 49???? i heard it as 29, 39, 40!!! yours makes MORE sense.

I agree with most of the posts here. Great lyrics and a stunning performance. This is the essence of Elvis. Everything I admire in him as a songwriter, and especially as a performer . . . is here. There is a passion, a vile, an anger, and a rocking edge. Punk rock without the stupidity, the old rebellion and spirit very much alive and intact. But improved and somehow sharper than ever. Can't wait to see him at the Ryman in a couple weeks.

Thankyou for posting/sharing audible-visible performance suitable for English consumption.
Lovely performance-song, but as someone who uses hats suitably, I do wish that DPAM would learn at his age to wear his appropriately.
Nice to see Obama and Putin in Normandy yesterday too.

Hey stumpy - Where is the hatman when you need him?
D-day with Putin is a joke.
My uncles jumped out of planes there and survived. My family has photos of my uncle releasing prisoners from a concentration camp. I'm sure there are similar stories from others on the board, too.
Thankful for the life I have...

THIS is a life of crime...http://www.ebay.com/itm/Elvis-Costello- ... 2518.l4276sulky lad wrote:So EC recognises BA's life of recording crime does he ?
whatever i do upon the internet is NO SECRET! i never delete, i never hide, i never cheat, i never lie. i have been speaking of taping here for years upon years, i rest easy that he does NOT loathe me. the ebay culprits who do this thievery are the true criminals. i imagine we're good in his eyes sulky. i especially like the way he ends THAT tweet with "Peace" and i also imagine him to be a fan of "field recordings" and such.

Like the quote I've mentioned before. I think EC has a sneaky mild resignation where we tapers are concerned . The bootlegs like you quoted are much more insidious and undermining (IMHO) you know he loves us Brother !

yes he do SULKY! in fact, NEXT time i meet him...i will ask him to take a picture holding SONY: he'll LOVE it!
these REAL crooks that burn to cd RELEASED MATERIAL and then SELL it at BIG prices are indeed the enemy of us all. i bet there are recordings of mine that he himself is glad exist. e.g. the one off EC/BURT duo appearance at Virgin Records NYC 10-6-1998. they had NO ONE taping for certain. and mine captures the evening for posterity sake.
AND, he thinks i can't rhyme???

Re: Elvis on Letterman, June 5th 2014
They repeated this episode on Friday, June 13, 2014. Maybe to give a plug closer to the actual Carnegie Hall date, which I think was the original plan prior to the last minute substitution earlier this month
