Covers of Elvis songs

Post by johnfoyle »

Lets start this thread - hopefully with additions soon!- with this -

Hi from France

Just to let you know that, since today, Sucrepop, a french pop band,
has released a cover of the long honeymoon

Can be heard and freely downloaded on

http://www.sucrepop.com
wwww.myspace.com/sucrepop

Hope you like it as much as we've love to record it
--
Musicalement

Phil

des bonbons pour les oreilles

Excellent version. It's simple, direct style makes the Imperial Bedroom version seem over-produced and indulgent. Best of all , it's sung in English. Well, French English ; think Peter Sellers in Clouseau mode .

It results in lines sounding like this-

Everything in 'eaven and earth is almost right

Little things just seem to undermine her confidence in heem

Who can she turn to when the chance of coincidence is sleem

There's no money back guarantee on future 'appiness

Zare's been a long honeymoon

Zare's no money back guarantee on future happiness

One of my favorite covers by Sondre Lerche:

LYDIA LOVELESS

Record Store Day 7" April 2012

When LL was at Schubas in Chicago this November, she SHUT THE ROOM UP with her version of Elvis Costello's "Alison." Bloodshot Rob was so giddy and taken aback he threw around his considerable force of personality and convinced her to run into the studio and record it, before it got too polished. She acquiesced. It'll be ready for Record Store Day 2012 on a limited edition 7" with an album B-side.

She is fantastic. I have both her records and saw her live last year. I hope I can get my hands on this.

Migdd, this is also one of my favourites! - suddenly, I feel less lonely

I like the orchestration on this cover :

...but not the voice (if I had a nightmare involving Petula Clark, this would be it).

Love that version - great to see a woman singing his songs.

The way that the singer flashes her diamond ring during the lyric, I don't know if the she's been informed of the real meaning of the slang term 'family jewels'!

I saw the Jesus of Cool at the Sydney Opera House a few weeks back. The final encore was a jaw dropping acoustic rendition of 'Alison' that brought the house down.

London's Calling
Various

This title will be released on July 23, 2012

Released on 23rd July London’s Calling features a multi-cultural collective of London-based musicians paying tribute to the most international of cities and is unlike anything you’ve heard before.

An Ethio-jazz version of Lilly Allen’s ‘LDN’ from the Krar Collective sits alongside Lokkhi Terra’s Bengali-Cuban take on The Small Face’s ‘Itchycoo Park’. There are two versions of The Clash’s ‘London Calling’ - an Arabic dancehall banger from Afrikan Boy & TGU and an Indo-jazz-punk belter from Arun Ghosh

Afro-reggae pioneers the Soothsayers bring us a soothing version of Ralph Mctell’s ‘Streets of London’. Sephardic-flamenco act Los Desterrados take Elvis Costello’s ‘I don’t want to go to Chelsea’ on a Moroccan road-trip and Billy Bragg’s ‘A13 Trunk road to the sea’ gets a Brit-Afro working over courtesy of AJ Holmes & the Hackney Empire.

According to the 2001 census, 30% of London residents were born outside England (not including second and third generation immigrants), with more than 300 languages spoken and over 50 non-indigenous communities with populations of 10,000 or more. London’s Calling reflects this diversity and gives these communities a platform to engage with fellow Londoners, whilst staking London’s claim as the most important and influential city for music in the world.

London’s Calling will be launched with a takeover of the main stage at the opening weekend of the London Pleasure Gardens featuring Soothsayers, AJ Holmes & the Hackney Empire, Katy Prado & the Mamboleros & Cumbe on the 30/06 and Lokkhi Terra, Krar Collective & Los Desterrados on the 01/07

.

Financed by an Arts Council grant and recorded in London throughout April 2012, London’s Calling is the debut project from London-based production agency Culture Clash whose manifesto is a celebration of the new global, cultural mash-up.

"As varied and flourishing as the UK music scene is, it's still predominantly Anglo centric with a mainstream that doesn't scratch the surface of the amazing and culturally diverse musical talent that Britain and its major cities has”, says co-producer MC. “With all eyes on the capital this Summer, what better way to celebrate the most culturally diverse city in the world than with anthemic London songs being re-interpreted by the sort of people that makes this city so great.”

Nathan Ellis' (The Casket Lottery) strips away the distortion on his solo debut, revealing a vulnerable and raw side that runs a gamut of emotions while showcasing his incredible ability as a singer-songwriter. Heartfelt and atmospheric, Ellis draws on his previous efforts on his self-titled EP, which features three tracks, "Balance Beam," "Orion Too" and "The Comedians," which was written by Elvis Costello and covered by Roy Orbison.

Released 8 August '12

The Austrians Willi Resetarits and Stubnblues cover the Costello/Toussaint song "The Sharpest Thorn" (in German) on their recent album "Ois Offn".

You can hear a preview of the first minute or so here:

http://www.williresetarits.at/musik/offn.php

It is the last track listed and the title in German is "De Dornen Bleibm" .

Soundcloud just shut down my account with them, and banned me.

Apparently it's illegal to cover Elvis Costello. :|
