Vote for the best top 20 Elvis songs!

Post by Otis Westinghouse »

In case any of you haven't been following the fun, the Countdown Kid's quite brilliant top 100 Elvis chart has reached number 20, and if you follow the full listing, you can vote for your top 20, which is incredibly hard as there are so many superb songs not listed. Can't find a way to list 100-21, exporting from iPod playlist doesn't do it, but it's fun to read through and compile.

I might be wrong but I think what Otis meant was our Top 20 of the songs not yet mentioned in Countdown Kid's list.
So, from the songs left off so far, this is my Top 20 (random order)

Sleep Of The Just
I Want You
I’ll Wear It Proudly
Man Out Of Time
Still
Suffering Face
Crimes Of Paris
I Want To Vanish
London's Brilliant Parade
Veronica
My Dark Life
This Sad Burlesque
Georgie And Her Rival
Worthless Thing
The Beat
Man Called Uncle
New Amsterdam
Shipbuilding
New Lace Sleeves
Shoes Without Heels

And this means many gems might not make Countdown Kid's list - Suit Of Lights, King Horse, High Fidelity, The Poisoned Rose ....

Very much not wrong (I hope the text and the links made that pretty clear!).

Fun to see people's personal top 20s, but yes, I was hoping to see some more action on the top 20 prediction front on either of the above links. For me it's been the most interesting and enjoyable bit of listology I've seen in a long time and its result has been to turn me away from the many new CDs I've bought recently (inc. the lovely Joni boxset) and quite obsessively back in the direction of three of Countdown Kid's Mount Rushmore of great songwriters, Elvis, Bruce and Bob. I'm now filling the many gaps in my collections of the latter two via HMV knock-down deals and also Amazon Marketplace where, for example, I can get The Ghost of Tom Joad delivered in a 'used - very good' condition for £1.73!

There are some absolute crackers in your list, IP, that I could happily include. I'll Wear It Proudly an obvious example. I would also nominate one of Elvis's greatest rhythmic moments, Strict Time.

Well pardon my myopia- I will have to revisit my list and do suitable corrections- trouble is there is no consistent way to see the previous 80 other than to scroll down the list and write them down. Will work at in between preparing Sunday dinner for the entire family- yes I am cooking!!!!!! Had to do something with the Turkey left over in the freezer from the Holidays.

Well Turkey is in the oven and work on the 'trimmings can begin in a little while so here we go within Otis's parameters:

again no particular order:

1 Still
2 Suit of Lights
3 Shabby Doll
4 Kid About It
5 You Hung the Moon
6 Possession
7 After the Fall
8 Hoover Factory
9 High Fidelity
10 Dr. Watson, I Presume
11 Jimmie Standing in the Rain
12 Less Than Zero
13 I'll Wear it Proudly
14 Brilliant Mistake
15 For the Stars
16 Almost Ideal Eyes
17 New Lace Sleeves
18 Flutter & Wow
19 Shipbuilding
20 Sleep of the Just

* I forgot I would also include "The Deportee's Club" to that list.

Too many of my personal favorites left off of that top 20 :(

Nice work. Indeed it requires some study to work out which ones are taken, but it's pleasurable study. Impressive lack of old chestnuts in the list today.

Hear Oliver's Army on the radio today, Jonathan Agnew, aka Aggers, on Desert Island Disc. Funnily enough, Dancing Queen had been a few songs earlier. Struck me how a song that can seem almost too familiar then is heard unexpectedly and it blows you away. It sounded quite magnificent, perfect pop, beautifully delivered and recorded. Immaculate in every sense. I think if I were redoing my list today, it would need to be much higher than 11th. A masterpiece.

Again in no particular order :-

I Want You
This Year's Girl
Party Girl
Clowntime Is Over No. 2
Dr. Luther's Assistant
Clubland
Strict Time
You Little Fool
Black Sails In The Sunset
My Little Blue Window
The Invisible Man
High Fidelity
Bedlam
International Echo
Jimmie Standing In The Rain

Only 14 because at least another 10 of my top 20 have already disappeared in the chart
One other point, hardly a hit single ( or a duff one ) in my list

That's a cracking list. It's incredible how easily brilliant alternatives can be conjured up. Nice to see a PTC choice in there. It's an album I love as a whole and would have peppered a top 100 with that plus several others had it been my selection, Invisible Man being one of the higher ranking ones. Good call on Clowntime, too. I love both versions, but probably would go for the GH version over no. 2.

I have to admit I am quite useless at determing such lists; either for the remaining tracks or even my all time EC list and am very envious of those who can! However when I hear a certain song I am able to say that it is one of my "favourites". For example Riot Act recently listened to is definitely a favourite but is is top 5 10 20 100 or whatever I dont really know and of course my problem is accentuated by my changing opinions of some songs previoulsy favoured or not. So in summary nothing to contribute here, sorry, but when this excellent coutdown and associated discussion is over I may have a much better idea for "the next time round" !
