MUD, wind and wet failed to deter thousands of music lovers at Saturday's A Day On The Green festival at Bimbadgen Estate.
The line-up featured Elvis Costello & The Imposters, Sunnyboys, Jo Jo Zep and The Falcons, Tex Perkins and The Dark Horses, and Stephen Cummings.
The sun came out long enough for the crowd to twist and groove to iconic Australian band The Sunnyboys, who rounded out their set with the 1960s surf-inspired track Alone With You.

Interesting set list for a festival style show. Green Shirt, Sulky Girl, Bedlam and Brilliant Mistake appeared alongside more familiar fare. Then he ended the show with Oliver's Army. I wonder if he's ever ended a show with Oliver's Army before?

I don't know if he's ever ended with Oliver's Army. I wonder if it's coincidence what his parting words would have been...

On FB Paul Inglis asked: "I wonder if he's ever ended a show with Oliver's Army before?"
The only instance I can find, although there may be others amongst the 554 known concerts where Oliver's Army has been performed, is this one:
http://www.elviscostello.info/wiki/inde ... os_Angeles
This was an instore appearance at a record store in Los Angeles to promote The Delivery Man. I guess there were a large number of punters who wanted to hear "the Hits" as well as TDM, and Elvis played this as a parting shot to give them what they wanted.

those people should be happier that they got the VERY RARE & awesome BUTTON MY LIP.i loved hearing all these TDM songs LIVE at Avery Fisher Hall in July 04 without knowing them yet. it was such a great rush always to see E perform new, as yet unreleased, songs. i hope he returns to that mode of work.

I think it's more a sign of unhappiness on Elvis' part. There are any number of songs that he could have ended with but he chose one where the final words are "And I would rather be anywhere else but here today".
Or maybe I'm reading too much into it.

good one VG!!! and for the record, i'd say "YES...you ARE reading WAY too much into it." guess he just thought to play the song for some inexplicable reason, maybe thought he'd do more, then just called it a night instead. Lord knows we've seen the man do all kinds of tricky, unexpected, obtuse, oblique and obscure opening and closing songs throughout the years. God bless his ability to vary it all so much. i say he should open the night in NY on February 28th with SUBSTITUTE as the band has NOT been doing it this tour!verbal gymnastics wrote:I think it's more a sign of unhappiness on Elvis' part. Maybe you're right, and the outdoor dates have proved to be a lucrative chore. Here is Pete at the previous Day On the Green show at McLaren Vale on 27 January.verbal gymnastics wrote:I think it's more a sign of unhappiness on Elvis' part. Opening with Alison in NYC the day after he left the stage in Huntington, NY early due to an obnoxious audience was even more notable.

He played Oliver's Army as an encore, so I don't think it was intended as a message. He needn't have done the encore, he'd already finished the main set with Peace, Love and Understanding.
Oliver's Army was a chart hit in Australia - (#24) - so that might well be the reason it was played. He played most of his Australian hits ... except for Good Year For the Roses(#34), Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood and Veronica (#27).

What a terrific show of the "EC JukeboX" variety!!. . . From the thrilling mad clatter of 'Lipstick Vogue' that kicked-off the set, to the whole-hillside-singalong encore of 'Oliver's Army', Elvis & The Imposters amazed, enthralled and amused. His Holiness is right about the 'give'emthe hit' aspect of the one-off encore - everyone here loves the song - though i reckon the event had run over time (they began blasting junk over the p.a. immediately upon the band leaving the stage after P,L & U) otherwise we'd have surely got 'Accidents', 'Roses' or 'Veronica' which are all household hits Downunder, sung around the barbeque each Saturday night

so long as i don't lose this glorious distress..."
