Note the passing of Paul Motian in today's NY Times at 80 years of age. He had an incredible sense of swing and I have enjoyed his playing for many years going back to his days with Bill Evans and Scott LaFaro. He seemed to be a fun person as you would often witness him laughing on the bandstand behind his drums. Another of the 'new' old giants has passed. {Otis, I think you would appreciate his musicianship.} Caught him frequently over the last decade at the Vanguard with Joe Lovano and Bill Frisell.

Sad news.
The Village Vanguard album with Lee Konitz, Charlie Haden, and Brad Mehldau is one of my favorites of the year.

Good record. Memorable drummer. I like how he went back in his later years and taught himself piano so he could learn composition. That even maintains an EC connection with the old six degrees game with Lee Konitz going back to the "North" album.
