What are you listening to right now?

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

But I don't want to hear about more brilliant singer-songwriters, there's already too many of them! Actually, if he's that good...

... then again, his name is disturbingly close to 'jens Lehmann'. Couldn't he have changed it?

Secretly Canadian are flavour of the month, no? Antony and Johnsons, Richard Swift and now this. Wow!

Reaching To The Converted - Billy Bragg

It opens with an alternate version of Greetings to the New Brunette which has the fabulous Kirsty Macoll on it. The song itself has the marvellous lines

"How can you lie there and think of England when you don't even know who's in the team?"

and, my all time favourite Bragg couplet

"I'm celebrating my love for you
With a pint of beer and a new tattoo".

 How can you lie and think of England ? That's not what I was taught.

When I was a little girl and people from my mother's family wanted me to swallow some bitter medication they told me "fermes les yeux et penses à l'Angleterre" ("Close your eyes and think of England" ).
Don't where they got that from, perhaps my grandfather's half sister who was (very) British and quite influencial in the family. Anyway it worked.

Lying back and thinking of England was used as a term for women who did not want sex but reluctantly went ahead and had it.

I'm not sure if it had any other sinister sexual implications.

There's a first. Actually I believe it's what girls were instructed to do during sex, period. At least it's what The Nuns told my mom that women were supposed to do once they were married, cause what else would you do? Enjoy it? It's only for procreation, ya see.... My mom seems to have taken it to heart; it's a wonder she even had five of us. But I digress...

I knew that phrase very well but was baffled at its use in B. Bragg's Greetings To the New Brunette when he sings "How can you lie there and think of England when you don't even know who's in the team?" 'Team? What Team?' I asked myself. Before being exposed to all you footy types I didn't know one said things like "England for the world cup!". See how y'all have edumacated this ignorant Yank?

Here's a funny thing. Tallulah reminded me (via her blog) of how utterly hilarious THIS* is. But I'd never noticed the music was by Elbow!

That's great, but where's the song from? It's not on any of their albums - maybe a b-side?

Following the Jens Lekman chat, I heartily recommend this newie....

It gathers together earlier EPs and bits and bobs and is actually a stronger record than the album posted above. Great stuff.

The Richard Swift arrived on Saturday and is a fantastic record. Two totally different collections of music on two cds; both equally majestic. A great knack for songwriting. Well worth checking out.

Right now, it's

Nice one Moody, a much underrated record - and me and the missus are off to see the old buggers tonight

and he'd like to lift us up, but we're a very heavy load

I like pictures of angry young intellectual singer-songwriters sucking on their glasses. Why don't we have more of those?
