Delivery Man - the 'song sequel' album

Post by johnfoyle »

Three songs on The Delivery Man are , perhaps ,'sequel songs'. The Judgement is a squel to Solomon Burkes The Price , Monkey To Man is a sequel to Dave Bartholemews The Monkey and , maybe , Either Side Of The Same Town is a sequel to Spooner Oldham and Dan Penns Dark End Of The Street.

Can anyone spot any other ones?

Button My Lip - sequel to "Our Lips Are Sealed" by the Go-Go's
Country Darkness - sequel to "Shoot Out the Lights" by Richard Thompson
There's A Story In Your Voice - sequel to "Every Picture Tells a Story" by Rod Stewart
Bedlam - sequel to "Bedlam in Belgium" by AC/DC
The Delivery Man - sequel to "Return to Sender" by Elvis Presley
Nothing Clings Like Ivy - sequel to "Poison Ivy" by The Coasters
The Name Of This Thing Is Not Love - sequel to "Thing Called Love" by John Hiatt/Bonnie Raitt
Heart Shaped Bruise - sequel to "Hurt So Good" by John Mellencamp
Needle Time - sequel to "Needle and the Damage Done" by Neil Young
The Scarlet Tide - sequel to "Only Women Bleed" by Alice Cooper

Seriously, what makes you think "Either Side of the Same Town" is a sequel to "Dark End of the Street" (which, by the way, was written by Dan Penn & Chips Moman, not Spooner Oldham)?

Just a hunch - hence the `maybe`. Love the other suggestions , thanks.

I agree with John -- I think "Either Side of the Same Town" is very definitely a nod to "Dark End of the Street". Maybe "sequel" isn't the right word for it, but the songs are very similar in style and lyrical content.

Here are the first and third verses of "Dark End of the Street":

At the dark end of the street
That's where we always meet
Hiding in shadows where we don't belong
Living in darkness to hide our wrong
You and me at the dark end of the street
You and me

And when the daylight hour rolls around
If by chance we should walk downtown
If we should meet, just walk on by
Ooooh darling, please don't cry
Tonight we'll meet at the dark end of the street
You and me

Compare that to the first verse of "Either Side":

Nothing can ever be the same
All of the promises we made seem hollow
But there's still some streets in this town
Oh, they're marked, they're marked with your shadow
So if you see me, look surprised
Well, well, well, if you don't
Oh, just pass me by
And I may, I may even brush your sleeve
Oh, as you turn around, turn around and leave

They're way too close for it to be coincidental. Plus, "Dark End of the Street" showing back up in Elvis's setlists this year tells us the song's been on his mind.
in a certain light, he looked like...

Elvis should just write sequel songs to his own songs... all the time.
