I've just had a pleasant Christmas day with the family. In the back of mind, however, has been the news about Vic Chestnutt. As I write, accounts vary as to his condition but it's not looking good. While hoping for the best I'm thinking back to the show I saw him do here in Dublin in Dec.'07. It's online , with , seemimgly, Vic's approval -

Part of the show's power was Vic's inclusion of his wheelchair-bound condition. Coming from the sound desk he manually rolled himself through the crowd to below the stage edge. Two roadies jumped down and lifted the chair on to the stage. He could have been wheeled on , maybe in discreet lighting, from the stage wings. He, clearly, chose not. He then did a show of lyrical intensity , keeping the crowd hanging on to every word.
As the show ended he asked if anyone could give him a joint. As he later signed stuff at the merchendise stall, a roll-up was offered to him. He fumbled taking it and it dropped on the ground. As he continued signing, the supplier could be seen on the ground, feeling around in the semi-dark under the wheelchair until the goods were found.

VIC CHESNUTT 1964 - 2009
Surrounded by family and friends, Vic Chesnutt died in Athens Georgia this afternoon, Friday 25 December at 14:59.
In the few short years that we knew him personally, Vic transformed our sense of what true character, grace and determination are all about. Our grief is inexpressible and Vic’s absence unfathomable.
We will make more information available according to the wishes of Vic’s family and friends.
