Wine, women and song — But where’s the cheese?

We went to the opening of Michael Dorf’s new City Winery on Varick St. last week and it looks like a great space for music performances, of which he plans to put on many. The space will officially open New Year’s Eve, and upcoming shows will see performances by the likes of Lenny Kaye, Suzanne Vega and Steve Nieve (Elvis Costello’s former keyboardist); Dorf, who used to run the Knitting Factory in Tribeca, hinted that a “special guest” might drop by for Nieve’s gig, which will be on Nieve’s birthday. Anyone say “Elvis?”

Steve Nieve
is one of the most respected and versatile keyboardists performing today. Originally part of the Attractions, with Elvis Costello, Nieve has become a staple of Costello's increasingly ambitious post-Attractions music. In between touring and recording commitments with the Attractions, Nieve also released two full-length solo albums, 1983's "Keyboard Jungle" and 1987's "Playboy," and did session work with other fellow new-wavers, including Nick Lowe, Kirsty MacColl, Madness, the Damned, Tim Finn, Nick Heyward, Hothouse Flowers, Graham Parker, and Squeeze (who hired Nieve as their touring keyboardist in the early '90s). Nieve has continued to tour into the millennium, including a series of acclaimed duos with Costello and Sting, and also composed two classical operas, "Parasite" and "Welcome to the Voice." The former was co-written with French cinematographer Muriel Téodori and premiered in Paris, and the latter was performed at the 2000 Bell Atlantic Jazz Festival in New York, featuring Costello and the Brodsky Quartet. In 2004, Nieve released his fifth solo disc," Windows," inspired by the sights and sounds he encountered during years of touring.

For this special Birthday Pairings performance, Nieve will be joined on-stage with a host of friends drawn from his entourage of renowned musicians. It's a once in a lifetime performance not to be missed.

Pairings is a unique "blend" at City Winery: an intimate concert series-served with fine wine-that will take place on City Winery's main stage every Thursday evening, starting in January 2009. Each concert will be preceded by an optional tasting or private dinner, followed by personal performances from some of today's most respected musicians. Pairings has been designed especially with City Winery's target audience of cool urban wine sophisticates in mind, and promises to be a stand-out program that draws from City Winery's core rudiments-wine, music and food-to create a holistic cultural evening unlike any other in Manhattan.

I guess they weren't happy with the Welcome to the Voice production either.

I am taking a chance and going. Got two seats right up front. If the show isn't good there is always wine. Seeing it is in NYC I don't see how Elvis can miss it. Whose B-day is it anyways.., Steve's? Mine is earlier in the month so it can be my bday too.

Since the London group is doing a meet up the same day .... maybe all the Elvis fans in the greater NY, NJ, PA ... area should go to this show. We could drink wine and hope for Elvis to show up ... or Graham Parker or Nick Lowe or someome else cool.

The London group (ie just me and SoLack I should think  ) will be sitting in the pub waiting for Elvis to show up. I do hope he comes. He didn't write or phone or anything last time...

I guess I just lost...I just got this email what is up with this? Ask John he should be able to figure out. Maybe Elvis is coming to your gathering.

"Dear ticket buyer,
Because of unforeseen commitments by Steve's friends, he has asked us to move the Steve Nieve and Friends concert to April 8th from its original date of Feb 21st. Although the date has moved, we have ensured that the tickets and the seats you bought on your original purchase are the same. If for some reason this date no longer works for you we would be happy to accommodate you with a ticket to any of our upcoming shows where we still have availability.
Thanks for your understanding and hope that you can still join us on this amazing night of music, food & wine at City Winery.

Best,
Shlomo

Shlomo... love the name. April is a better time of year to visit NYC anyway. I wish I could make it, but it's not happening. I'm patiently awaiting the possible T-Bone/E.C. tour this summer. Will it happen?

You like the name because it has as many O's in it as MOJO. Who knows with Elvis. Right now we have the Spectacle to watch

The show was fun. Steve was joined by the billed guests plus Glenn Tillbrook (ex-Squeeze) for much of the show and Davey joined to play bass for the last two songs. EC songs included Shipbuilding, Green Shirt and closing with a rousing Nick Lowe's PL&U but done in the EC fashion. A few songs from WTTV, Tillbrook did 7 to 8 of his newer songs + a very interesting version of Goodbye Girl

The played from just after 9pm until maybe 11:30 with one short break.

Steve commented at one point on mis-quoting but not the last bit "what a pleasure it is to work with Elvis the greatest lyricist of all time". Keyboard was a highlight for me - seems like a day in Steve's (former) life in a way

All in all a very fun Tuesday night

The show was very eclectic...poems, opera, rock and roll and a little Squeeze. The City Winery was very nice and easy to get to and we parked right beside the venue ...no charge. All pretty good things for NYC. Meet some new friends and old and yes I danced once...couldn't help myself. Here is the actual set list I nabbed from the stage.

Confident Again
Stupid Thing to Do
Words
Shipbuilding
Still*
Espionage
Nostalgia
Thinking About Ibrahim
Cello - Vincent solo
Mumu
To Be Is Strong
Best of Times *
Because of a strike
Goodbye Girl*
Vertigo
******
Green Shirt
Pandemonium
Untouchable*
Keyboard
Welcome to the Voice
Burn The Past
Life Preserver
Young People
Up
Peace Love and Understanding
(stay in place to 1.2.3. bow)

See you at the Count Basie and the Beacon....how about Philadelphia Elvis don't forget us like you have Ireland
