Mercury Awards 2008

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

Mercury Awards 2008

Post by Otis Westinghouse »

Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid
Radiohead - In Rainbows
British Sea Power - Do You Like Rock Music?
Robert Plant and Alison Krauss - Raising Sand
Burial - Untrue
Estelle - Shine
Adele - 19
Laura Marling - Alas, I Cannot Swim
Rachel Unthank and The Winterset - The Bairns
Neon Neon - Stainless Style
Portico Quartet - Knee Deep In The North Sea
Last Shadow Puppets - The Age

Would of course love to see Elbow get it, but right now my vote goes to In Rainbows, which I've come to appreciate more than ever in the last two months.

Only familiar with three of those - Plant/Krauss, Radiohead and Elbow. All fine albums.

Got my tickets for the Last Shadow Puppets yesterday. Going to see Radiohead on 8/8

Otis - have you heard their version of Bowie's In The Heat of The Morning? My favourite Bowie cover since Edwyn's Gospel According To Tony Day

Hello there. Yes, I had heard that and it suits them very well. Great song!

Hope you love Radiohead live as much as I did.

When they came on stage in the evening sunshine and started up with the fabtastic Reckoner, with awesomely good sound quality, all seemed well with the world.

Well it was great to see Elbow win. Guy was clearly pretty pissed, they all were, lots of giggling! the snippet of the Crane Driver rendition from the show was fantastic. That doesn't grab me so much on the record, but I read a live review saying it was highlight of the night and I can imagine the drama being immense. Surprised to see their Oct 6 Cambridge date isn't yet sold out. It will be now!

I enjoyed SImon Armitage being on the TV coverage. Decent poet and someone I can relate to (being a poet's all very well, but really he wanted to be in a band... and he chose Ian Curtis as his cultural hero in an excellent show on Radio 4). Shares my tastes entirely, loving Radiohead and Elbow. I'd like to hear the whole Burial LP, I only know the one track, which they played a bit of and which was on Word's sampler. I like te Mercury for giving exposure and therefore sales to such acts. Laura Marling looked good to. Some really strong stuff. Will watch the fuller 1 hour coverage they're showing on Friday.
