I'm so sorry to hear about your father's passing. I sure miss mine. But his spirit is still alive in us and Spooky accuses me of channeling him at times.

Truly sorry to hear of your loss, solack.

I hope you find solace and comfort in whatever you believe about afterlife. Maybe he is amazed by where he is. I am genuinely sorry for the pain you must feel.
I am certain that many of his traits are embodied in you and will be passed on to your children. He lives through you, them, and your progeny that follow...

It just dangles, huh? I could reel in a marlin with mine.verbal gymnastics wrote:There's nothing I like more than getting my rod out and letting it dangle...mood swung wrote:Who fishes round here?
To answer your question, moody, I really don't know the first thing about fishing. I've been fishing a total of two times - once when I was eight and then again in Mexico when I as in high school. I caught nothing both times and went home frustrated. Recently my son has been asking if we could go fishing sometime, but I need to find someone who can get us the right gear and teach us how to do it properly. Fly fishing seems to be the big thing around here - there is a store on the corner that sells all kinds of equipment for fly fishermen.

Re: Random Thoughts
I've never actually done it myself, but that fly fishing is supposed to be a lot harder than it looks. I'm more of a go-to-walmart-get-a-couple-of-zebco 404s-and-a-tube-of-crickets and hit the river girl. And then you can bring the crickets home and listen to them chirp! It's like camping, without the dirt! Austin and I have caught fish fever lately. We like to catch fish of any ilk, and we're not particular about size. We release them anyway.
Like me, the "g" is silent.

I've heard that about you, Verbal. Word travels across the continents about those kinds of things, you know.verbal gymnastics wrote:There's nothing I like more than getting my rod out and letting it dangle...mood swung wrote:Who fishes round here?
I don't fish, Moody, but the boys do. I'm just trying to get my kitchen rebuilt. And I didn't do it to keep from cooking, but it's getting me take out for a couple more weeks.
Re: Random Thoughts
One of the most confusing things about fishing is when a one armed fisherman says "I caught one this big".

Re: Random Thoughts
I'm a fly-fishin geek I guess you could say. Tie my own flies, etc . Its great fun. As a hobby it has so many different dimensions to explore -- I'll never be able to get to them all. For instance, right now I'm in the process of building a split-cane bamboo fly rod. Ordered in some 12 ft sections of Tonkin cane from China and got me a Stanley 9 1/2 block plane outfitted with a Hock blade that can scrape shavings of bamboo down to .0001 inch and well I won't bore you with all the details, but its quite a hobby in and of itself just tooling up to build a split cane bamboo rod, but I am so far, enjoying it. First rod should be done sometime in 2009.
As for fly-fishing itself, its really not that difficult. If you're used to fishing with conventional tackle and you know how to tie some basic knots and don't get frustrated too easily, you can be casting well enough to catch fish with just a few minutes of instruction. There is some snobbery types that get attracted to the sport and will insist that you take 2 weeks of lessons through an Orvis authorized dealer and that your fishing rod better have cost plenty or you aren't doing it right -- don't pay any attention to those types.
I mainly pursue trout here in the lovely state of Missouri, but smallmouth and largemouth bass caught on the fly are a new passion. Ain't nothin like having a 17 inch smallmouth explode on foam popper you made yourself.
If I can be of any assistance as you get started with this great pastime, just let me know.
