Nice surprise for me. Shellac very rarely release new albums and this one seems great so far. I also picked up re-released copies of 1000 hurts and my favourite of theirs, At Action Park.

I got a bonus this week, so in addition to rapid replacement of the camera I dropped in the sea and lost last weekend (with a better new one that cost less than the previous one did 4 years ago!), I couldn't resist snapping this up:

I'm really impressed my Domino's relentless efforts to help me relive my late teens. In addition to the heavenly Orange Juice and Josef K comps, now comes the complete recordings Young Marble Giants on a 3 CD set (initial limited pressing, regular release is 2 CDs minus the Peel sessions third CD). I don't think I've played Colossal Youth in 20+ years, but it was one of my favourite LPs at the time, along with the Final Day single. They had such a unique sound and feel to them. I know they reformed to play live at this year's Hay (literary) festival, though haven't read any reviews.

I didn't order it off Domino. I assume first orders would get the limited edition, but they don't state that as such, so being paranoid, I got it on Amazon, who did, aand took advantage of their 'buy this also' offer of the Prefab Sprout Steve McQueen Deluxe reissue. So it's real nostalgia time for the early 80s. I'm going to love having both of these.

Â£3 in HMV. bought it to console myself over the demise of Fopp. I used to drive around Spain playing a Best of Marvin and my three favourite songs were always the title track, Mercy, Mercy Me and Inner City Blues. Brilliant stuff. Nice to get them on CD and finally hear the whole LP for, I think, the first time.

I also invested (Â£1 each!) in taking out Ben Folds Songs For Silverman and The Good, The Bad and The Queen from the local library, both good finds as there CDs I've wanted to check out.

I just bought a couple of vinyl records:

King and Queen- Otis Redding and Carla Thomas
It is a little bit worn but worth to listen to Otis and Carla trade insults in "Tramp"

The Wild, the Innocent and the E-Street Shuffle- Bruce Springsteen
My favorite Bruce record and this is just overwhelming to listen to. I've only gotten through side 1 and it left me with a burst of joy.

the reason why I skipped side 2 of the former, I had to listen to EC's country voice on "Sweet Dreams" and "Too Far Gone"

Oddly enough I noticed that Steve Nieve's name was mispelled on the back cover, I was wondering if this a general error on the Columbia release.

I hear this guy's a big pop star in Europe. From the sounds coming out of my speakers I can hear why. Each song is performed with a guest musician such as BB King, Miles Davis, Sting, Solomon Burke, to name just a few. It's a good listen.

Â£2.55 in HMV. Played this to death as a 14 year old. Sold the vinyl as a 16/17 year old. Nice to hear it again. I always loved the Cowboy Song. And his leather trousers.

Nice to have Ghost Town in the house, a first. Plus Gangsters on CD. Plus Nelson Mandela. Some of the other late period Specials and Special AKA stuff is a bit flat. I object to the inaccuracy of the listing as the later period stuff only as Special AKA when of course Gangsters was released iunder that name and so shoudl also be listed as such.

And of course the three Lloyd Cole BBC CD releases ut this week - how could I not? No images, but thee notes, with Lloyd's opening comment, from his site. Looks like I'll have 5 versions of Forest Fire in this lot, though sadly none of Why I Love Country Music, which appears to have been omitted from the Hammy Palais tracks (as it's on my bootleg of that broadcast):

(Note - We were involved in choosing the included material and it represents pretty much every single track we recorded 'In Session' at the BBC along with the best of the live concert recordings that were broadcast. There are sleeve notes written by Neil and I and the artwork features the photography of Peter Anderson.)

Lloyd Cole

Announces the release of Commotions and solo BBC sessions.

August 6th 2007 sees the release of a trio of albums from Lloyd Cole on Universal. The three albums, which feature an assortment of BBC sessions and live recordings, cover both his early work with The Commotions and his later solo career.

Lloyd Cole & The Commotions â€“ Live At The BBC Vol 1 essentially features versions of tracks from Rattlesnakes, the bandâ€™s debut long player and all their BBC session tracks from 1984. While Live At The BBC â€“ Vol 2 features tracks from their follow up, Easy Pieces and session tracks from the 1985 â€“ 86 period. Lloyd Cole â€“ Live At The BBC features the best of his solo performances including a complete concert recording and session tracks .

Lloyd Cole And The Commotions formed in 1982 in Glasgow. By 1984 they had signed to Polydor Records and released their debut long-player, Rattlesnakes. The articulate songwriting and lush orchestration have seen it widely acclaimed as one of the most important releases of the 1980s; NME recently placed it in the top 100 albums of all time.

The band went on to release two further albums, Easy Pieces in 1985 and Mainstream in 1987 before disbanding in the late 80s.

Post Commotions, Lloyd Cole relocated to New York where he recorded and released a series of solo albums. 2004 saw the Commotions re-form to perform a number of UK dates to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of Rattlesnakes.

Got a great Coltrane bargain the other week. The Atlantic Heavyweight Champion boxset was repressed on vinyl in 2000 and tends to go for about Â£100. Got one new for Â£39.99! Very pleased.
The Richard Hawley album arrived on vinyl today. Sounds great.
And finally, was very pleased with a bargain from eil.com last week - not a phrase often used with that site. They had a half-price offer on US promos, plus I had a Â£5 credit left as an incentive to shop again, so I managed to get the Costello 'An Overview' 74 minute interview disc to promote an earlier reissue run for Â£3.45 delivered! Should be here tomorrow.

Recently got Rockpile, Graham Parker's Squeezing Out Sparks, And Joni Mitchell's Blue on vinyl. All new to me (hahah), all enjoyable, although I much prefer The Hissing of Summer Lawns, as far as Joni goes. Next up is Court and Spark, I guess.

Hejira is my top Joni LP, with Hissing a close second, and I'm also partial to Mingus, but in different ways.

I was suitably enthused by the excellent song A Heavy Sigh from this on the current Word sampler to buy it at 9.30am on today, its day of release (in Fopp, of course). Have only played half so far, but it's sounding really good. A lovely range of styles, great crooning, touching words. Check this review:

Of course the real reason I was in Fopp then was that today is the release date for the three Joy Division reissues. Oddly, they only had Still and Closer, no UP yet, so I just got Still as none of that's on Heart and Soul and I thought it would stop my wife from being obliged to buy yet another pair of shoes if I only got these two releases today!

Was that Bad Ambassador in the Oxfam shop? You were in my local store! This wasn't at 9.30 on Monday was it? Come on, it's a great place, isn't it? Sadly the Â£4 rack seemes to have gone. I liked that addition.
