R.I.P

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

Philip Seymor Hoffman- not surprising given his open admission of his heroin habit. Such a waste but a lifetime of memorable roles to recall:

Amongst my favorites of his roles from Cold Mountain and not to forget The Talented Mr. Ripley http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oeCRY2mdih8...

Note the passing on 2/6/14 of yet another American Poet of some distinction- Maxine Kumin at the age of 88. Deft in skill with rhyme, meter and assonance and gifted with a keen eye for the natural world, her poetry paid attention to the things of this world. Not a strident feminist but confident that women should hold important places in this world, her poetry testified to a feminine engagement with the world.

Your Show of Shows was a very, very funny show.

Some 200 years of existence came to an end last week for the Eisenhower Tree, situated on the 17the Green at Augusta. It succumbed to severe damage caused by the ice storms that ravaged the East Coast in the past weeks. It is going to make for an entirely different strategy and view when the golfers come up the course in early April for The Masters tournament. :(

Jack of All Parades wrote:This is one that as Martin says leaves a great sadness. I, too, found myself going back to his words last evening, but in my case his perceptive and often humorous prose- last night his Oxford Lectures The Redress of Poetry. They are to me the most vigorous defense of this art form by any modern writer. I could cite many poems with vigor but I think with Mr. Heaney it is best to let him talk-he did that so well. This little exchange with Simon Armitage about how the two of them came to poetry is expressive of how Heaney could hold one's attention:

You will find it in a side embedded piece.

This is good profile piece that I remember being quite good from The New Yorker back in 2000:

His obituary from today's New York Times:

A tender and moving remembrance by the great critic Helen Vendler- a good friend of the poet's:

According to Janis Ian's Facebook (Janis was a close friend), Jesse Winchester lost his battle with cancer today.

Really don't have any more words at the moment. . .

I , too, am deeply saddened at this news. A solid songwriter who had the talent of connecting immediately with an audience.

That's very sad. V obvious connection here with a rapt audience, Neko Case in tears, Elvis confessing it got him in both the rehearsal and the recording, and Ron S at the end drinking it all up. An amazing song. It's the only thing I really know from Jesse, but it made enough of an impact to make me mourn his passing today:

There's more to life than books, you know, but not much more

Otis, it would appear the Twain quote about premature announcements of one's death applies here. People, including myself, took initial reports for truth and jumped the truth. I understand he is in hospice care at this time. The prognosis is not positive but he is very much alive and I hope resting comfortably. His eponymous first album cemented for me a long listening relationship with him as a songwriter and that goes back to 1970. Over the years he has written some real gems. You posted one of his last. I think EC and I along with a few thousand others discovered that first record all those years ago and have privately treasured it. I was in Rhino Records last week in New Paltz, NY and they had a copy of the compilation record that his old record company put out many years ago when his stuff was out of print. I should have snatched it up for you. I think you would enjoy it. He is not Lloyd Cole but my feelings for him I suspect border on your feelings for Mr. Cole. There is a humaneness and honesty in their songwriting coupled with a moral decency that I find compelling.

Here is one from that eponymous first record:

Here is a more recent song:
