recent DVD purchases

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

recent DVD purchases

I picked up the 2DVD deluxe edition of Jeff Stein's documentary on The Who, The Kids Are Alright. The picture and sound are amazing, and it's LOADED with bonus features.

Tightrope
The Bedroom Window
McCabe & Mrs. Miller
On order and expected soon: Time Bandits (since the Criterion deluxe edition is going out of print, I got a bargain price on it)

The Cure, Trilogy - This is an interesting idea for a concert and DVD. They performed, over two consecutive nights last fall, three albums in their entireity: Pornography, Disintegration and Bloodflowers.

Fargo SE....good choice! Movie scrubs up really nice, but the extras are a little thinner than I would have liked.

When are they going to release Big Lebowski SE????

Godzilla rocks...especially the ones with shite dubbing (so most of them). I like the one with Jet Jaguar (I think it's godzilla v megalon)... it has the most tenuous explanation for a robot suddenly growin 100 foot high...

''He must have somehow programmed himself to increase his own size!''

Worst episode ever!

I am the opposite... I refuse to buy any of the films unless they are in their original Japanese language with English sub-titles. I have a source for these in the US and now have approximately 25 of the Godzilla and associated films. By associated I mean films like "Baragon vs Frankenstein", "Battle of the Gargantuas", "King Ghidora", "The Mysterians", and so on... basically, all of the Toho company releases.

As the board's unofficial movie geek, I've gotta say I'm impressed.

While I personally rarely buy DVDs -- all of the DVDs I own were gifts, review copies or really, really cheap (I rent en masse instead), all you guys have really good taste.

I don't think any of you rented anything I would turn my nose up at -- though I might not have the patience to watch all of Ultraman or all those Godzilla films....

And I'm sure I don't have to tell Tim(e) the fun fact that Godzilla creator Inashiro (sp?) Honda was a good friend and contemporary of Akira Kurasawa. Birds of a feather?

These were purchased mainly for my son who is crazy about Godzilla to the point of having Godzilla, Mothra, Mechagodzilla, and Baragon dolls  The same is the case for Ultraman (all varieties from Ultra 7 to Cosmos).

Yes, Ishiro Honda co-directed Kurosawa's Dreams (which I also have on DVD)... it is not hard to see why I suppose, as in Dreams Kurosawa is making a fairly strong statement about the environment and our seeming intention to destroy ourselves. Godzilla is basically a metaphor for the path we are heading down towards nuclear destruction. (I recall reading somewhere that Godzilla was a monster created by the souls of those who died in the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings.)

I suppose Honda is the king of monster movies whereas Kurosawa is just the king of movies full stop (imho) :)

Tim(e) --

You're a good dad!

Re: the soulful origin of Godzilla. I think I might have read that too -- but have you seen the original, Japanese language version of Godzilla (the one without Raymond Burr)? Does it say so there, or does that just give the standard atomic mutation argument?

I do have the original Japanese language (with subtitles and no Raymond Burr) Godzilla 1954 release. I will have to sit down and watch it closely to learn the truth :)

As far as I know the only DVD they ever did that has an audio commentary from the Coens is The Man Who Wasn't There. The new edition of Fargo has an audio commentary, but it's done by cinematographer Roger Deakins, right?

Yeah Blue....Roger Deakins zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I havent got TMWWT on dvd, but probably will do in the longrun..look forward to it. I guess some directors dont do them, they just seem like a really interesting pair.

I think Im right in saying Spielbergo hasn't done one... I heard Ridley Scotts on Hannibal and it was dull.

The ones on the Simpsons/Futurama boxsets however are really good, as are the ones on the uk comedies Spaced, I'm Alan Partridge and Phoenix Nights.

Yes, I do actually listen to them. Please no mickey taking.

Audio commentaries are great! The Francis Ford Copolla audio commentaries on the Godfather trilogy are exteremely interesting. Christopher Guest and Eugene Levy on Best In Show and A Mighty Wind are a hoot, as is Spinal Tap on This Is Spinal Tap. Eric Idle's on The Rutles. Even Dennis Hopper's on Easy Rider is pretty insightful. Wes Anderson's on The Royal Tenenbaums. Martin Scorsese and Robbie Robertson on The Last Waltz.

I can't stand to listen to Steven Soderbergh's commentary on The Limey though... he spends the whole time arguing with the film's screenwriter.

Steve's commentary on Out of Sight is fascinating. Probably his most complete film so far, it's interesting to see how he gets it right by leaving out all 'the fat'.

The Limey is an incredible film, but the audio commentary offers very little insight or even entertainment value. There's a 2nd audio commentary with Peter Fonda, Terence Stamp, and Leslie Ann Warren, but it's kind of irrelevant.
