Peter Case has heart surgery

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

Peter Case has heart surgery

Post by Copenhagen Fan »

I know that most of the people here are experts in music and have great taste...but nobody mentions or gives Peter Case any credit here! For those of you who love good music, he is highly recommended.

He's in my top 5 musical artists.

1) EC
2) The Dead
3) The Who
4) Warren Zevon
5) Peter Case

He's so obscure I bet most of us have never heard of him. I haven't.

How would you describe his music?
Who’s this kid with his mumbo jumbo?

WELL..he plays mostly accustic....some of the coolest guitar I've heard. He wrote Hangin' On the Telephone, and was lead singer for the Plimsouls, with the big hit "A million Miles Away" as seen in Valley Girl. He's great! Bruce Thomas plays on one of his albums as well.

I too recommend Peter Case, and can happily note yet more EC connections. His first album, which I think is his best, (called Peter Case) was produced by T-Bone Burnett and in it he has a rendition of "A Pair of Brown Eyes", the Shane McGowan song from the EC-produced "Rum Sodomy and the Lash", which is the best cover of a Shane song that I know of. Saw him live, and like EC his little hands of granite have a habit of breaking guitar strings in mid-song, over and over again.

One of the best singers I've ever seen. Thing is he has zero profile. The last time he played Dublin about 14 people turned up....and they were mostly related to the local support band. Peter happily signed the cd booklets I brought with me , even though I nearly broke his glasses !

He's a bit of a minor legend in L.A., at least though I think people still confuse him with others from similar strata like Bob Forrest. There's a lot of really talented people in just about every artistic field who never really take off and it's kind of sad. I've got to admit that I haven't really kept up much with his post-Plimsouls career (though he was a local critics darling for many years as a solo act.) In any case, Case did have his day in the sun with the Plimsouls ALMOST having a big hit or two. I no longer own it, but their original "Zero Hour" ep was a work of garage rock genius.

Yeah, if you don't have the "..................................................Guitar" album already you should click that link in great haste.

I especially remember Put Down The Gun" from that album being on all my mixed tapes for about a year after I got it.

Never 'eard of him, but sounds interesting. That LP title is obviously a ref to Wallace Stevens' poem The Man With The Blue Guitar: http://members.tripod.com/~Wallyrus/blguit.html

I think Case is probably about where he wants to be.

He may not be a household name, but he's still making music, and on his own terms.

I met him in Chicago back in 86 or 87, when he was grabbing a little limelight, and he was a congenial, down to earth fellow.

The broken guitar string remark is kind of amusing, because around the same time period (86 - 87), he was playing an acoustic gig in Chicago, and during a point in the show where he broke a string, he yelled out "Any questions?", to pass the idle time. I yelled out from the crowd, "Do you know Billy Bragg?". It got a good laugh but seemed trite and contrived at the time. Come to think of it, it sounds trite and contrived right now!

You are right. Jack Lee wrote "Hanging On The Telephone" according to All Music Guide. Unless there is some story we don't know about who wrote the song, then it appears Jack wrote it. It's a good song and I wouldn't be surprised if Peter wrote it anyways.

'Zero Hour' was brilliant. I still have it on vinyl......little good it does me without a turntable, but I don't have the heart to get rid of it. I never understood why 'Great Big World' and 'Zero Hour' weren't hit singles when they were re-released on the major label debut. I can remember seeing them at the Starwood and the Whisky, etc back around 80-82.

The Plimsouls were a great and vastly underappreciated band.

For any newbies wanting to check out Peter's music - and it's while worth the time - "Who's Gonna Go Your Crooked Mile?" is a superb collection of Peter's solo material. It doesn't include the most recent album, but has selections from everything before that. Can't recommend it highly enough. Some really gorgeous tunes and a few stellar live performances, including most notably the title song.

Unfortunateley Hip-o, who are the only ones who have it for ordering, dont ship to Europe, so you'll have to make arrangements, like I did, to have it ship to someone in the US, and have them send it on. A bit awkward, but well worth it.

There are a few tunes from "Bee Line" on "Crooked Mile" and they're quite good, though perhaps not my favorites on the compilation. I think "Flying Saucer Blues" is better, of his more recent discs.
