Fan meet-up , London , Oct. 16 '10

Post by johnfoyle »

Is anyone on for a meet-up to coincide with the Barney Bubbles exhibition in London in Sept./Oct? It would be great to catch up with all the gossip from the shows I missed in June. Additionally, advance copies of a certain Oct. release may well by then be circulating and we could discuss same.

I'm busy Sat. Oct.2nd, so can plan around any other dates. It would be good to know ASAP , so that cheap flights can be booked.

An exhibition investigating the working practices of the cult graphic designer Barney Bubbles is being staged as part of the London Design Festival.

The show - at London's Chelsea Space - will present for the first time original artefacts and artwork, sketchbooks, student notebooks, equipment and photography relating to the inventive and audacious designs he produced over the two decades up to his death in 1983.

Real name Colin Fulcher (b. Whitton, west London, 1941), Barney Bubbles studied at Twickenham art school and was senior graphic designer at Conran Design 1965-68. Subsequently he focused on the music industry, designing record sleeves, posters, advertising, videos and ephemera for such clients as Stiff Records, Billy Bragg, Elvis Costello, The Damned, Ian Dury, Hawkwind, Nick Lowe and The Specials.

Among the exhibits are sketches and proofs for a range of unreleased designs; original artwork for Barney Bubbles' last project, the Ian Dury album 4000 Weeks Holiday; and a never-before publicly displayed 7ft tall Chuck Berry mobile sculpture created as a private commission for a music industry client.

Process is curated by Paul Gorman, author of the Barney Bubbles monograph Reasons To Be Cheerful; the show will coincide with the launch of the revised second edition which includes 50-plus new images, many fresh interviews and a welter of additional information.

For various reasons, I'm thinking of Sat. Sept. 25th - does that work for anyone?

I will have had to be extra nice to be able to get a pass that day.

I'm away a conference that week and returning on Friday 24th. Getting a pass for 25th is going to be difficult. But I'll keep in touch about the arrangements and if I'm there I'm there.

And if I'm not then I'm sure the day/evening will be better for it.

Sept 18th is doable - better for more of you?

Or Oct. 16th , at the other end of the timeframe.

I asked my son about the A-team to see if he could work out who was whom in our line up and before he knew my role, he said Face is the witty lady-killer (typecasting I thought) but somehow he wasn't convinced when I told him  ! He wasn't surprised about VG as Mr.T however !!

To be honest, when I saw the Snickers advert with Mr. T and the football player rolls around on the pitch feigning injury, I did think of you , VG

I've booked my flights for Oct.16th so - sound fanfare- that'll be the day.

It'll be a day trip for me , flying back to Dublin that evening. The focus, therefore, will be the Barney Bubbles show in Chelsea. Yes, the hilarity of it , we want to go to Chelsea.

The exhibition opens at 10, closing at 4. Maybe we could aim for being there at 12, see the show, and then off to the pub!

More later.

Just got this -

Dear John

First I wanted to thank you about the kind words you have published in various places about my Barney Bubbles book.
I see from the EC message board that you and some pals are planning a visit to my show Process in October.
If you like I can make sure I am there that day - I don't live that far away so it's no sweat - and talk you guys through some of the exhibits/show you some bits and pieces of interest.

All the best

Paul Gorman
