Pre-FM broadcast recording; mixed and produced for Brazilian Radio
"although the term CLASSIC is tossed around much too freely when describing jazz records, it really does apply
to this recording- brilliant arrangements, expert playing and superb sound quality make this a mandatory release
for hardcore and casual jazz fans alike, and the addition of Mr. Costello makes it even more worthwhile"

-Interesting note: the term free jazz festival does NOT mean the festival was “free” , as in no admission charge. the “FREE” refers to the name of Brazils top selling brand of cigarettes, FREE BRAND CIGARETTES, who sponsored the event.

a "what's all this then?" recording #417; 2002

This ten minute film from Brazilian TV includes clips from the Free Jazz Festival, Sue Mingus talking about asking Elvis to add lyrics to some of her husband's songs, and Elvis solo with an acoustic guitar.

Also Elvis wrestling with the Portuguese language. No sign still of the EC versions of the six Mingus songs he added lyrics to being released, with the exception of Hora Decubitus, on MFBB and Invisible Lady on the Mingus Big Band album: Tonight At Noon... Three Or Four Shades Of Love.

The description for this film on Vimeo says:

or for the non-Portuguese speakers amongst us:

""I have no intention of resting on what I have already done. The most important thing is to try to find the next thing to do" (Elvis Costello)

Sue Mingus, producer of Mingus Big Band, talks about Charles Mingus' desire to compose for Elvis Costello's band. She says that the singer has a lot of faith, trust and love to the musicians, giving them freedom to work, add, make small changes and expand their music. Elvis is a musician who is at risk because he experiences other rhythms. Mingus Big Band mixes all types of music and cultures in one."

SUE MINGUS
April 2, 1930 - September 24, 2022

It is with great sadness that we relay the news of Sue Graham Ungaro Mingus’ passing. She died peacefully with all her children and grandchildren around her, on September 24, on the 15th anniversary of her brother Richard Graham’s…
