I'm sure it's not Elvis--probably a minion. It's very cool, though. But I'm afraid if we talk about it too much it will stop happening. Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned it...

Birmingham Elvis Presley convention organiser charged with assault

Jan 12 2011

by Nick McCarthy, Birmingham Mail

THE organiser of a Birmingham Elvis Presley convention has been charged with attacking the son of the King’s guitarist in the city, the Mail has learned.

We told yesterday how a man had suffered a broken nose and cheekbone following an alleged assault at the Hilton Metropole hotel, near the NEC, early on Sunday.

The victim was understood to be US citizen Jeff Burton, the 48-year-old son of The King’s guitarist James Burton, who played with Elvis from 1969 until his death in 1977.

And the man charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm in connection with the incident has been named as Michael Cawthray.

The 43-year-old, from north Wales, is a director of the Elvis European Championships Ltd, the event which was taking place at the hotel at the time.

He is also an Elvis tribute act and is due to appear before Solihull Magistrates’ Court later this month.

Both men were staying at the Metropole, where 80 Elvis impersonators had been vying to win the championships.

Mr Cawthray’s wife and business partner, Sioned, refused to comment when the Mail approached her.

A West Midlands Police spokeswoman said: “Police were called at 4.25am on January 9 to reports of a man bleeding in the lobby area of the Hilton Metropole Hotel.

“A 48-year-old man was taken to Heartlands Hospital with a broken cheekbone, a broken nose and cuts to his face. He remains in a stable condition at the hospital.

“A 43-year-old man was arrested nearby on suspicion of assault and has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He has been bailed to appear at Solihull Magistrates’ Court later this month.”

A spokesman for the Hilton hotel chain said: “The well-being, safety and security of our guests are of paramount importance to us and the hotel’s security team immediately alerted the police and emergency services to the situation.

“This matter is now in the hands of the police for further investigation.”

As well as Elvis, Louisiana-born James Burton also worked with Frank Sinatra, Johnny Cash, John Denver, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Costello, Joe Osborn, and Roy Orbison.

He formed the James Burton Band in 2008 and has performed with his son Jeff, who sings and plays the guitar.

A Reissue.

With the way he dresses of late, I think "An Ostentation of Elvises" would also be quite appropriate.

What's the collective noun for Collective Nouns? Whatever it is there's a whole discombobulation of them here to choose from:

The choice of noun depends on which animal group most closely mimics the Elvises behaviour.

Adam Hansen’s Shakespeare and Popular Music was published by Continuum a few months ago and is well worth reading.

Hansen is Senior Lecturer in English at Northumbria University but this book is not aimed solely at students. Hansen knows and loves Shakespeare and music in equal measure and this is his attempt to connect with music fans as well as undergraduates.

The book throws lots of questions at the reader. How have Shakespearean characters, words, texts and iconography been represented and reworked through popular music? Do all types of popular music represent Shakespeare in the same ways? And how do the links between Shakespeare and popular music challenge what we think we know about both Shakespeare and popular music?

Hansen asks these questions and looks to Freud, the Kaiser Chiefs, Tom Waits, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, the Sex Pistols, Greil Marcus, Jon Savage and many more for answers. Greg Walker, Professor of English Literature at Edinburgh University accurately describes Hansen’s work as a “delightful bricolage of early-modern and post-modern cultural history.”

Are record clubs the new book clubs?
By David Sillito

BBC arts correspondent

(extract)

A growing number of music-lovers unhappy about the way album tracks are enjoyed in a pick-and-mix fashion have decided to take action.

The rules are strict. No talking. No texting. You must listen to every song on the album.

Classic Album Sundays treat our best-loved records like great symphonies and are being set up in London, Scotland and Wales.

It is a topic that has been making the papers. Pink Floyd went to court to try to protect the integrity of albums such as Dark Side of the Moon. For music critics such as Neil McCormick of the Daily Telegraph they were totally justified.

"These are works of art at their greatest level. You can pick up a Dickens book and read a little bit of it and get some pleasure but you will not get the same pleasure as you would picking it up and reading it from beginning to end."

He took me through his vinyl collection, the albums you have to listen to all the way through. Top of the list was Blue by Joni Mitchell, then in no particular order came Get Happy by Elvis Costello, Dark side of the Moon, Bob Dylan's Blood on the Tracks and all of Led Zeppelin. The list was a long one.

"They've created works that have a beginning, a middle and end, that have nuances, themes, that take you on a journey that's as great as any novel, any opera, any drama

Scottish actor and film-maker Peter Mullan tells Metro how the violent Glasgow of his childhood inspired his latest film Neds.

17th January, 2011

(extract)

Even when he enrolled at Glasgow University to study drama and economic history, the 17-year-old Mullan was surrounded by violence – particularly when he got a job as a bouncer. ‘We did a Stranglers concert that went nuts. We were all fired because it broke out in mass mayhem,’ he recalls. ‘I was also Elvis Costello’s bodyguard for a night. And he sat there and told me I was a fascist in a bow tie, which I took real f***ing exception to. And so we had a great chat. I had to explain to him that I was trying to get through university, that this was a way of earning money and that I didn’t hurt anybody. And I said: “I got to see you guys free so don’t you be calling me a fascist in a bow tie.”’

Although it didn't exist then as it's an American coinage from something like the 1820s.

Villager Conor O'Brien talks up Elvis yet again -

http://bullblacknova.blogspot.com/2011/ ... agers.html

January 19th '11

(extract)

I press Conor to talk a little about the writing process.

“I like Randy Newman. He likes to get inside people – especially people he doesn’t like. He writes some really hate filled songs. Neil Young then is very different. He writes such simple, almost child-like songs, but I like when people take the risk and just play with words. That’s what I tried to do. Just spill the words onto the page.”

But what about now? The first album was driven by a mixture of subtle hate and childlike innocence, what of number two?

“I’m listening to a lot of Elvis Costello. He’s much more academic (than Neil Young) but it’s great to study if you like words. And our tour manager has introduced me to this Argentine singer named Mercedes Sosa. She’s got this really deep, passionate voice.”
