He needs to utilize that falsetto more- it is a most effective tool in his musical arsenal- witness this clip of the song from his late show:

This song also deserved a place within those that made the final cut for "National Ransom".
"....there's a merry song that starts in 'I' and ends in 'You', as many famous pop songs do....'

Hatman - you penned this on 5th April ie some weeks before EC's final pick emerged, are you Elvis in disguise or if you're Nostradamus can I have the lottery numbers please?

Really nice choice for #1.

It's an incredible and beautiful song, and Elvis is in heavyweight league here. But, natural bias aside, he owns this. His falsetto on the chorus is spine-tingling, but when he comes in with the verse at 2:45, it moves to a new level. I'd love to know how much of this - lyrically and musically - is Elvis' work.

Didn’t Elvis say a few years back that he considered this was one of his best songs? That in and of itself says quite a lot. At the time I thought this could have been the song to bring Elvis some mainstream recognition but I was way off on that one. One of his best vocals, so touching and emotional, and breathtakingly beautiful. This has a special place in my heart, as I played it for my mom a year or so before dementia would steal so many memories from her. Years ago she had met Kris Kristofferson and was a big fan of his, and of course she knew of my love of Elvis from the time I was a bratty teen. She got a big kick hearing how Elvis had become such a great singer of ballads over the years as she “fondly” recalled the noisier sound of his earlier records. I must have played this dozens of times for her on my weekly Sunday visits, and it always reminds me of my mom.

At a UMADI book signing I thanked EC for putting it on the soundtrack, and he said "Oh yeah, that's a pretty one!"
