Post by Man out of Time »

"Don't start your morning moaning or you might wake up in Luxembourg"

Elvis and Steve Nieve play the Philharmonie, Luxembourg on Friday September 22, 2023. This will be only Elvis' second concert in Luxembourg, having played there with The Imposters in 2013.

Tickets are priced at 65/ 45 / 30 € and around half that for anyone aged under 30. The sale of tickets begins on 13 July at 10.00am (CET) so a while to wait.

I’m going. Meeting up with an old pal who relocated to Luxembourg 30 years ago. My first time seeing EC outside the UK/Ireland.

If you could make a note of the setlist and share that here, that would be great. Enjoy the show!!

Set list as best as I can recall;

When I was cruel
Watch your step
Waiting for the end of the world
Talking in the dark
Liquorice on your tongue
Mr Crescent
Luxembourg
Turn the red rose blue
Toledo
Watching the detectives
Shot with his own gun
Accidents will happen
I still have that other girl
Isabelle in tears
She
Peace love and understanding
Shipbuilding
Dishonour the stars
Alison

My personal view. This was a good show. First time I’d seen EC since Dublin 2018 when he was still recovering from illness and was struggling. Last night, in the beautiful modern Philharmonie concert hall, he was in fine spirits. The core set list from this tour was present and the additions were very welcome. Luxembourg was duly played “in an arrangement worked out on the TGV train today”, though not sure the audience got the reference. Standouts for me were the ballads, Mr Crescent was very powerful, Isabelle in tears worked better live than the recorded version. Dishonour the stars, not so much. The voice was strong, a little wayward in the upper register at times but he covers it well with microphone technique. Only real uh-oh moment was Toledo, EC started and when Steve joined they were in different keys, EC about a whole tone flat, but he recovered it well enough. The new Liquorice song sounded like the same riff as Shallow Grave.

EC was very animated on stage and tried hard with occasional success to get the (sold out) audience to participate. My host, who’s lived in Luxembourg for over 20 years, reckons Luxembourg audiences are polite but conservative. They certainly got to their feet at the end for a deserved standing ovation. Overall, very happy with the show, and the song selection, and the performance. I think the EC/Nieve combination is my favourite iteration.
