Elvis & The Imposters, Ledyard, CT, Foxwood Resort Casino , August 13th, 2022

Post by Man out of Time »

Elvis and The Imposters, with Charlie Sexton, play the Premier Theatre at Foxwood Resort Casino, in Ledyard, CT (or possibly Mashantucket - according to local reports) on Saturday August 13th. There is no support act for this show.

Writing in the New Haven Register on February 22, John Atashian previewed the show thus:

"Concert Connection: See Elvis Costello and the Imposters at Foxwoods Aug. 13

Elvis Costello and the Imposters are scheduled to perform Aug. 13 at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket.

Elvis Costello began writing songs at the age of 13. 2017 marked the 40th anniversary of the release his first record album, “My Aim Is True”. He is perhaps best known for the songs, “Alison”, “Pump It Up”, “Everyday I Write The Book” and his rendition of the Nick Lowe song, “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace Love and Understanding”. His record catalogue of more than 30 albums includes the contrasting pop and rock & roll “This Year’s Model”, ”Armed Forces”, “Imperial Bedroom”, “Blood and Chocolate” and “King Of America” along with an album of country covers, “Almost Blue” and two collections of orchestrally accompanied piano ballads, “Painted From Memory” - with Burt Bacharach and “North”.

He has performed worldwide with his bands, The Attractions, His Confederates — which featured two members of Elvis Presley’s “T.C.B” band — and his current group, The Imposters, with Steve Nieve, Pete Thomas and Davey Faragher, as well as solo concerts, most recently his acclaimed solo show, “Detour”.

Elvis Costello and The Attractions were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. That same year, Costello was awarded ASCAP’s prestigious Founder’s Award. In 2004, he was nominated for an Oscar for Best Song - “The Scarlet Tide,” co-written with T Bone Burnett and sung by Alison Krauss in the motion picture “Cold Mountain” In 2016, he was inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in the company of Chip Taylor and Tom Petty.

Costello’s first full-length orchestral work, “Il Sogno” was commissioned in 2000 by the Italian dance company, Aterballetto, for their adaptation of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and the score subsequently recorded by The London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas and released by Deutsche Grammophon, staying at the top of Billboard’s Contemporary Classical Charts for 14 weeks of 2004. This release led in turn to a series of orchestral concert performances with a number of the world’s great symphonic orchestras, opening with a suite from “Il Sogno” conducted by Alan Broadbent and closing with a selection of Costello songs arranged for voice, the piano of Steve Nieve and orchestra. He closed out 2007 by appearing solo as the middle act on “The Bob Dylan Show” for 28 dates.

In 2019, Costello released the Purse EP, consisting of four songs containing songwriting collaborations with Burt Bacharach and Paul McCartney, as well as musical settings of lyrics by Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan. In the same year, Costello was: presented a Lifetime Achievement Award for songwriting, in Nashville by the Americana Music Association; awarded an O.B.E. (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) for his services to music on the Queens Birthday Honors List; and announced as a recipient of a Hollywood Walk of Fame star for the class of 2020. For tickets to see Elvis Costello at Foxwoods, call 800-369-9663 or visit http://www.foxwoods.com"

A shame that this quite thorough account of Elvis' recording career omits "The Boy Named If" which I would suggest will provide a lot more of the setlist than Il Sogno.

Blondie + The Damned play the Premier Theatre at Foxwood on 12 August, and interestingly ticket prices for Elvis & The Imposters are more than for Blondie + The Damned. On the other hand, Blondie have sold more tickets for their show than have been sold for Elvis.

Who's going?

Rick Koster, writing in the New London Day today previews the show thus:

"Elvis Costello in concert at Foxwoods

In college – doing exactly what I do now, writing about music (though for the mighty Baylor Lariat, with about five more pounds of hair and 40 less pounds of stomach) – I reviewed Elvis Costello’s first album, “My Aim is True.”

I killed it, suggesting moronically and in painfully overwritten fashion that music fans will “drown in a toxic New Wave.” I remember that exact phrase because …

What an idiot! (Me, not Elvis.)

Mercifully, I soon tucked my rat-like tail betwixt my legs and climbed aboard the E Train. Here we are, 45 years later, and Costello and his latest band, the Imposters, are still delivering the goods in fine fashion.

The new album, “The Boy Named If,” is stuffed with brightly melodic, urgent and sharply clever tunes – the sort you’d instantly welcome in concert along with the older favorites.

Here’s your chance. Costello and the Imposters appear Saturday in the Premier Theater at Foxwoods.

Elvis Costello and the Imposters, 8 p.m. Saturday, Premier Theater, Foxwoods; $45-$75; http://www.foxwoods.com.

Curiously, I cannot see the phrase "drown in a toxic New Wave." in the Baylor Lariat's review of MAIT (link above). It is possible, I suppose, that they published two reviews of the album, and Rick's is not the one saved on the Wiki, but that seems unlikely. Perhaps his editor put a pencil through that line. Perhaps he wishes he's written that line, but didn't. Whatever the case, Rick has now seen the error of his ways and all the better for it.
