Elvis & The Imposters, Bensalem, PA, Xcite Center @ Parx Casino , August 12th, 2022

Post by Man out of Time »

Elvis and The Imposters, with Charlie Sexton, will play the XCite center at Parx Casino and Racing in Bensalem, PA on Friday 12 August. The show is now sold out, but over-priced tickets are available through the usual "resale" sites.

There is no support act for this show. Usually casino shows are shorter in duration that regular theatre shows, presumably so as not to distract the audience from the gaming tables and slots for too long. This may be an exception.

According to Wikipedia " The Xcite Center is an event center at Parx that hosts concerts, entertainment performances, comedy acts, and boxing and MMA matches. All shows require audience members to be over the age of 21. The event center has an area of 30,000 square feet (2,800 m2) and seats over 1,500 people. The Xcite Center opened on January 13, 2018, with a sold-out concert by Chicago."

Who's going?

Writing in the Philadelphia Inquirer on August 11, 2022, Dan DeLuca previews this show thus:

" Elvis Costello has been on a creative roll of late. The Boy Named If, his new album with the Imposters released in January, is the most rocked-out and energetic record in years, complete with plenty of Steve Nieve roller-rink keyboards and jagged guitar. This year, he also teamed with Alan Mayes, his bandmate in an early 1970s pub rock band called Rusty for a wholly worthwhile EP called The Resurrection of Rust. This summer, Costello has been touring with his old producer, Nick Lowe, but Lowe is not on this date. $55-$95, 8 p.m., 8/12, Xcite Center at Parx Casino, 2999 Street Road, Bensalem, parxcasino.com"

Anyone going to be there tonight?

I had low expectations going in but that was excellent. Very nice theater with great sound. Surprisingly good crowd. The Boy Named If Songs sounded much more crisp and definitely benefitted from the repeated playings as opposed to the first leg of the tour. Great to see Pete dancing back stage right to Surrender to the Rhythm right before the band came out. They played some cool Spanish/English mashup remix of Magnificent Hurt on the PA while waiting for the show to start, with EC and a female singer, wonder if that is a future release? I loved the set with Nicole, they sounded great together and Still Too Soon To Know was gorgeous and a first for me. Glad to hear My Most Beautiful Mistake and The Man You Love to Hate, which were not played on the first leg and also sounded great. Overall, I am happy I decided to go at the last minute. Definitely worth the hour drive from my house. I bought the ticket at 6 pm and was in my seat by 7:15 pm!

One pet peeve: I could not believe how many people were watching the concert on the video screen rather than looking at the stage! Crazy! and we were in the 8th row! Whyyyyyyy????

The soundcheck was 3 songs performed in their entirety:
1) The Boy Named If
2) Mistook Me For A Friend
3) I'll Wear It Proudly w/ Nicole Adkins

@Newspaper Pane, I was in the 4th row and people around me were staring at the screens too. I agree, it was completely nuts. If the show were streamed online, I'm convinced people would watch it on their phones, rather than looking at the stage in front of them.

Staring a screens, gee, nothing new there. Sad to hear that was the vibe there. Phones up, too?

EC should offer up an online subscription service via Nugs.net. I’ve seen Grateful Dead shows through this service and it is awesome. Could be good option for his 10 day stint in NYC. Nugs - gotta love the name, too! Nugs for you, nugs for me.

Also I don't know if this has been noted before but EC also threw some lines from Isabelle In Tears during Watching the Detectives in addition to Invisible Lady.

And Steve was sporting the Clockwork Orange look with an all white outfit and a black bowler cap!

I gotta admit Mike....like many i think, i do not dig Isabelle much at all. But I will give it another spin or two today while we are discussing it here. But my curiosity...what were the lines he threw in that did catch your ear? AND I also wonder if it has happened before and was missed a few times. A job for ANCT no doubt if tapers were about. :D And an A++ for your wikilike professionalism for catching it!! :D :D

Eating humble pie UPDATE: I DO LIKE ISABELLE. it is the French foray ADIEU PARIS I can't enjoy much.

The lines were (in spoken word form)

She says that's a good idea
As she pours herself a shot
But she can't get the genius
Back into the bottle

And they did play Adieu Paris on the PA before the concert, just for you BA!

Heh. I love it, and I think it's one of his finest lyrical creations. The onomatopoeia of 'tripped - up - the - stairs' is gorgeous, the rhyming is lovely, and the idea of this as a bookend to 'A Slow Drag with Josephine' with women who are implicitly 1920s/1930s based is great.

But agree that 'Adieu Paris' is not at the top end of his oeuvre!
