This concert is now moved to Koninklijk Theater Carré: https://www.ticketmaster.nl/event/28295 ... a5f5008237

elvis costello & the imposters

In ieders geheugen staan Elvis’ legendarische songs 'Alison’, 'Pump It Up’ en 'Everyday I Write The Book’ gegrift.

Elvis Costello & The Imposters in Koninklijk Theater Carré (live-recensie)

Hoogtepunten genoeg

Het prachtige bluesachtige Big Stars Are Tumbling eindigt in samenzang.

Uitdagend gitaarspel

Elvis Costello & The Imposters at Royal Theater Carré (live review)

Anyone who goes to an Elvis Costello concert knows that he gets value for money: old and new songs, conviviality – and that for several hours in a row. In return, people are expected to sing along and clap along. Also this evening in the Royal Theater Carré Costello and his Imposters were on stage for almost three hours and there was plenty to enjoy.

When the band comes on, we hear music from a record, Everybody Knows by Neil Young, but not sung by the Canadian. Later Costello explains that we were listening to his latest album, The Resurrection Of Rust, on which he recorded the music he had wanted to make when he was 17 with his band Rusty. He picks up the microphone and then starts to sing 'real': Accidents Will Happen. One of the many beautiful songs the Brit wrote.

Little new growth?

The voice of the sixties is a bit stiff at first, but that changes after a few songs. In Green Shirt, drummer Pete Thomas immediately goes wild. The band, veterans supplemented with guitarist Charlie Sexton, also known from Bob Dylan's band, is known as the proverbial house. “It seems like yesterday that I was here for the first time,” says Costello. That was 1978. Was it the first time the aforementioned Dylan had promised to come but didn't show up? Today he is already there for the seventh time. Originally we would have been in the AFAS Live today. With its capacity of 6,000, it turned out to be a bit too large and even Carre (1750 places) still has empty seats. Are the fans slowly dying out and is there too little new arrival? The absentees really miss something.

Highlights enough

In Either Side Of The Same Town Costello's voice warms up well, perhaps thanks to the heavy slams. In the course of the evening it appears that his vocals are excellent on the harder songs, when he sings softly, now and then a note disappears. The excellent new album The Boy Named If is nice and powerful again, so that's a good thing. It is represented tonight with seven songs. The set list consists of 28 songs in total. Too many to mention them all, but there are plenty of highlights. Like Hetty O'Hara Confidential, which reminds me of the other Elvis. Or Watching The Detectives, paired with Invisible Lady, one of the crowd's favourites.

Costello would like us to sing along and clap along. Part of the audience participates enthusiastically, others keep their reserves. Excess also hurts a bit. The beautiful bluesy Big Stars Are Tumbling ends in harmony vocals. Other highlights: Penelope Halfpenny, about a tough school teacher Costello remembers from his youth, and Nick Lowes Surrender To The Rhythm from the latest album. There were more (A Good Year For The Roses), but on three quarters a series of heavier songs form, from (I Don't Want To Go to) Chelsea to Mr. & Mrs. Hush the climax for me. What an energy! The musicians shine, Costello enjoys it and the room goes wild.

Challenging guitar playing

Some people come for I Want You (probably those who would have liked to hear Shipbuilding too…). They are served at their beck and call. Alison, always beautiful, difficult to perform live because of the challenging guitar playing, but no problem for Sexton. We're going out with two more songs from The Boy Named If, of course Farewell, OK last.

Elvis Costello & The Imposters

What's so funny about peace love and understanding?

What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding’.

You Want Life, But It’s Never Long Enough. You Want Peace, Like It Is Something You Can Buy zingt Costelllo vanavond in het prachtige nummer ‘April 5th’.

Elvis Costello & The Imposters

What's so funny about peace love and understanding? Until a few months ago, the text was still a dated hippie idea. As Ukraine celebrates its 125th day of war, the last barrier to NATO expansion is lifted and a bunch of angry peasants storm a minister's house after a day of protest, Elvis Costello brings the unexpectedly relevant message to the Carré stage. And with the energy and dedication of a young man in his thirties instead of the old sixties he is now.

In the current line-up of The Imposters, Costello plays with quite a few old friends. He has known friends such as Steve Nieve and Pete Thomas since 1977. Bob Dylan guitarist Charlie Sexton, aged 53, is the "youngster" of the band. Elvis Costello is not only energetic, but also good in voice. His voice is also used as an instrument. He plays creatively with the sound. This by alternating between microphones during songs, using the voice of band members and sometimes singing without a microphone. He does this in the service of the song. That sounds very good.

Costello seems to have an urge to calm down in these troubled times. A large part of his career passes in almost three hours. He likes it. Enthusiasts are served with three hours of music without too much chatter in between. Rough songs, quiet songs and in the first half of the evening a striking number of slow reggae rhythms. 'Hetty O'Hara Confidential' is played with a lovely rock steady rhythm. Costello sings his lyrics half rapping and Sexton shows that a solid guitar solo also fits perfectly in a reggae rhythm. In other songs Costello and Sexton also put a Crazy Horse feeling about a Bob Marley rhythm in their guitar work. This loose, languid feeling detaches the visitors from the daily reality.

Costello and the Imposters are at their best in the upbeat pub rock and new wave of 'Surrender To The Rythm' and '(I Don't Want to Go to) Chelsea'. With delicious Hammond and catchy rhythms, Costello brings pure cheerfulness. With the icing on the cake of course the swinging '(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding'. Recorded by Costello in 1978. A song played with such passion it might as well have been a new song instead of an old classic.

You Want Life, But It's Never Long Enough. You Want Peace, Like It Is Something You Can Buy, Costelllo sings tonight in the beautiful song 'April 5th'. One of the slower songs in which Elvis Costello shows that he is still in good shape. Written with Kris Kristofferson and Rosanne Cash, it fits the evening perfectly. The song is about naive love. Tonight it mainly feels like an observation that after almost 45 years of singing about peace, love and understanding, we have arrived where we are now. Also in 2022, Costello still manages to create optimism that there are beautiful things that we must continue to stand for the beauty that is still there.
Since you put me down, it seems i've been very gloomy. You may laugh but pretty girls look right through me.

The song listed in the setlist as Tipsy Woman sounded to me (in the song and in the announcement) as Gypsy Woman. Probably this is a cover of the Curtis Mayfield song.
