Elvis singing from the fridge!

Post by Otis Westinghouse »

Excellent article in yesterday's Guardian where assorted music-related folk chose their fave music books. May of them were unknown books to me, but all sounded interesting to some extent. I wonder which of these books are known and loved to people here?

On the Elvis front, the always readable Guardian writer Alexis Petrifies chose Bob Stanley's Yeah, Yeah, Yeah: The Story of Modern Pop, which I confess to never having heard of. One of the examples of his humour was this:
The punk-era Elvis Costello sang “like he was standing in a fridge”
Kinda throwaway and ridiculous, but really a very funny line. I'm thinking of songs with quite a clenched and mannered vocal like Night Rally... yep, could be in a fridge on that one!
There's more to life than books, you know, but not much more

I like that metaphor - encapsulates the urgency, cold emotion, and the cramped pose of early E.C. quite well

Makes one wonder which piece of furniture we should picture him in/on these days

That's easy enough - TV is the thing (this year)!
Who’s this kid with his mumbo jumbo?
